Alliance vs Horde
Alliance vs Horde in World of Warcraft: Forever: five races each, Paladin and Shaman on both factions, the PvP ruleset's one-faction rule and balance limits, faction dungeons, and what Blizzard says about the differences.
The main difference between Alliance and Horde in World of Warcraft: Forever is no longer the class list, since both factions can play Paladin and Shaman, but the races, the world and the PvP ruleset's rule that a player's characters there belong to one faction. On Blizzard's Oct 29, 2026 podcast the team said the faction balance logic runs inside each ruleset, each aiming for 50/50, and that when one side tips too far, new characters of the majority are locked out. Horde and Alliance still cannot group together on any ruleset.
Quick facts
| Alliance races | Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, High Order Skyborne |
| Horde races | Orc, Undead, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne |
| Paladin | Alliance: Human, Dwarf. Horde: Undead |
| Shaman | Alliance: Dwarf. Horde: Orc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne |
| Grouping across factions | Not possible |
| PvP ruleset | One faction per player |
| Normal, Roleplaying, Hardcore | Both factions allowed |
| Faction balance | New characters on the larger side can be limited |
| New early dungeons | Hall of Thanes (Alliance), Ruins of Lordaeron (Horde) |
| Top PvP titles | Grand Marshal, High Warlord |
Classes now
Blizzard's table of Sep 22, 2026 ends the old split (Blizzard): the Dwarf Shaman and the Undead Paladin are new. Each side has a thin spot: the Horde has one Paladin race and the Alliance one Shaman race. Every class is on both sides. A Skyborne's faction decides its last class: Mage for the High Order, Shaman for the Windshapers (Skyborne). See Classes and Talents.
Racials
Sodapoppin said on Sep 24, 2026 that the Horde's racials were better for a duel tournament, one reason for his switch. Blizzard's launch pass of Oct 26, 2026 has since changed many of them. It prioritizes "racial identity" and accepts that some races are "slightly more effective" in some roles (Blizzard). Details are on Races and Racials and Best Race for Each Class.
The PvP ruleset rule
Blizzard's ruleset article is plain: "Once you create an Alliance character on the PvP ruleset, you won't be able to create a Horde character there, and vice versa." The others allow both. To keep the factions close, Forever can temporarily limit new characters of one faction, as Season of Discovery did (Blizzard).
The podcast of Oct 15, 2026 explains why: in 2019 Classic transfers let the losing faction leave a realm in a cascade, and later Blizzard stopped character creation on the dominant side, which worked well partly because players could not move servers. So Blizzard is "not likely to let folks move freely" between rulesets; see Rulesets.
Battlegrounds may include players from other rulesets, except Hardcore (Blizzard).
Faction differences in the world
Blizzard's dungeon designers said on Oct 8, 2026 that it made sense for the Alliance to have easy access to Hall of Thanes and the Horde not, and that this mattered more than faction parity. They said they would not shy away from giving one faction something specific.
Other published differences: Dalaran's open-world city is hostile to the Horde since the beta build of Oct 15, 2026, though the dungeon stays open with separate attunement quests (City of Dalaran) (Blizzard). The new ship from Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine links Alliance starting zones (Starting Zones). Darkspear Islands sets the Darkspear Raiders against the Theramore Expeditionary Force.
The Skyborne split is on purpose: the team said on Sep 24, 2026 that it found a people divided by belief compelling, and restricted their classes by faction.
What is not known yet
As of Oct 31, 2026, Blizzard has not published how each side is populated, the threshold for a faction lock, or whether Roleplay-PvP has the PvP ruleset's one-faction-per-player rule.
