Races and Racials

The playable races of World of Warcraft: Forever and their reworked racial abilities: two active and two passive per race, Blizzard's Dwarf and Undead examples, the list from the BlizzCon demo, the beta build of Oct 15, 2026 that replaced the weapon racials and retuned most races, and Blizzard's launch tuning pass of Oct 26 and 27.

Races in World of Warcraft: Forever are the eight original races of World of Warcraft plus the new Skyborne, and each now has a rebuilt set of racial abilities. At the Deep Dive panel at BlizzCon 2026 Blizzard said racials give players a reason to make a new character and "see the game through new eyes", so it made them "stronger and more different than they ever were before". Every race now has two active and two passive racials, tuned to give each a similar amount of offensive power alongside its own utility and survivability. In the same breath Blizzard announced six new race and class combinations, with more planned for future content. Blizzard detailed only the Dwarf and Undead racials on stage, and Warcraft Tavern catalogued the rest from the BlizzCon demo; Blizzard's beta build of Oct 15 then replaced the Human, Dwarf and Orc weapon racials with critical strike bonuses and retuned most races, and a final pass announced on Oct 26 and completed on Oct 27 rolled some of that back for launch on Nov 4, 2026 (see below).

Why Blizzard rebuilt racials

Blizzard first raised the change at its What's Next panel: "We want to give you reasons to want to spin up a new character and embark on a new journey," so it did a pass over race abilities to make each race bring "something special" that the others do not. The panel showed two passives as a preview: 5% more damage against beasts for Dwarves and a 5% chance for Undead to drain health from the target.

At the Deep Dive the next day Blizzard gave the structure: two active abilities and two passive abilities for every race, tuned to an equal amount of offensive power with signature utility and survivability. The presenter chose Dwarves and Undead as examples because of the new Dwarf Shamans and Undead Paladins.

Dwarf

Stoneform is mostly unchanged, but it used to increase armor, which did little for a Dwarf Priest with hardly any armor; it now reduces physical damage taken regardless of armor. Find Treasure used to conflict with finding herbs, tracking beasts and finding minerals, and can now stay active alongside any other tracking ability, so a Dwarf can look for iron and treasure at the same time.

Big Game Hunter is new, inspired by Hemet Nesingwary: Dwarves deal 5% more damage to beasts. Blizzard likes racials of this kind because they give different characters a chance to shine on different fights, whether against humanoids, undead or beasts. Mace Specialization shows how weapon skill has changed: while a Dwarf has any mace equipped, they gain 1% critical strike chance with spells, melee and ranged abilities, so Shamans and Priests now care about carrying a mace. The beta build of Oct 15, 2026 replaced it with Earth Fury, 2% more critical damage and healing with no weapon needed, and Find Treasure now also gives a chance at extra items from most chests.

Undead

Will of the Forsaken "was a little bit too strong": it granted immunity to charm, fear and sleep, and now simply breaks those effects. In return the Undead gain a lot. Cannibalize restores mana as well as health, Underwater Breathing is unchanged but matters more given how short Classic's breath bar is, and the new Touch of the Grave gives every attack and spell a chance to drain health from the target, adding damage and healing the Undead character. "That's just a taste of our racials," the presenter said, pointing visitors to the demo.

Cajato, reading the Forever tooltips from a community calculator, puts numbers on them: Cannibalize restores 35% of health and mana from corpses, Underwater Breathing lets an Undead stay submerged 300% longer, and Touch of the Grave has a 5% chance to drain up to 5% of maximum health. Cajato stresses that the descriptions say Will of the Forsaken no longer grants immunity afterwards.

Other Horde races

For the races Blizzard did not detail, Cajato's Warrior guide lists what the calculator shows, calling the descriptions community summaries that may omit cooldowns. The Orc has Blood Fury, 10% attack power and spell power for 15 seconds; a new active that gives immunity to curses and banes and reduces magical damage taken for 8 seconds; Axe Specialization, 1% spell and ability critical strike chance while wielding an axe; and Hardiness, which shortens stuns by 20%.

The Tauren keeps War Stomp, a 2-second stun around the player, and adds Cultivation, which grows bonus herbs without Herbalism, Plains Running, which builds movement speed the longer the player keeps moving, and Endurance, 5% total health and 1% hit chance. The Troll has Berserking, 10% attack and casting speed for 10 seconds; Rapid Regeneration, which restores 50% of maximum health; Beast Slaying, 5% damage against beasts; and Regeneration, which lets 10% of health regeneration continue in combat.

The Horde's Skyborne are the Windshapers. Their racials are Walk on Air, a 10-second downward glide; a run speed blessing of 10%; 1% melee, ranged and spell-casting haste; and Elemental Insight, 5% more damage to elementals. The Alliance's High Order Skyborne share three of these and swap the speed blessing for a ley line ability that boosts health and mana regeneration; both are covered on Skyborne.

Other Alliance races

The Human has Will to Survive, which removes stuns, and Perception, which detects stealth for 20 seconds; Sword Specialization now gives 2% spell and ability critical strike chance while holding a sword, and The Human Spirit adds 5% Spirit. The Night Elf has an active granting 10% critical strike chance for 15 seconds, Shadowmeld, which keeps the player stealthed while still, Quickness, 1% dodge and 2% run speed, and Wisp Spirit, 75% extra movement speed while dead.

The Gnome has Escape Artist, briefly granting immunity to roots and snares; Eureka, which reduces the cost and raises the damage or healing of the next three abilities by 10%; Expansive Mind, 5% more mana, rage and energy; and Engineering Specialization, which makes engineering devices more reliable. Cajato notes the calculator lists all ten race entries for Warriors, counting the two Skyborne sides separately.

The BlizzCon list

Warcraft Tavern catalogued every race's racials from the BlizzCon demo on Sep 12, 2026 (Warcraft Tavern). Blizzard's own race and class article of Sep 22, 2026 has the class tables but no racial list, and its Skyborne article lists only that race. Here they are as they stood before the Oct 15 changes below, with later names in brackets:

Orc Blood Fury (10% attack and spell power for 15 seconds), Shatter Curse (immunity to curses and banes, less magical damage for 8 seconds), Axe Specialization (Savage from Oct 15, Command from Oct 26), Hardiness (stuns 20% shorter)
Undead Will of the Forsaken, Cannibalize, Underwater Breathing, Touch of the Grave
Tauren War Stomp, Cultivation, Plainsrunning, Endurance
Troll Berserking, Rapid Regeneration, Beast Slaying, Regeneration (10% of health regeneration continues in combat)
Human Will to Survive, Perception, Sword Specialization (2%; Ruthless since Oct 15, 1% since Oct 26), The Human Spirit
Dwarf Stoneform, Find Treasure, Mace Specialization (Earth Fury from Oct 15, Artisan's Precision from Oct 26), Big Game Hunter
Night Elf Elune's Light (10% critical strike chance for 15 seconds), Shadowmeld, Quickness, Wisp Spirit
Gnome Escape Artist, Eureka!, Expansive Mind, Engineering Specialization
Skyborne Walk on Air, Wind Blessed and Elemental Insight, with Skysight for the Windshapers or Read Ley Line for the High Order

Priests have their own racial spells as well, two per race, which Blizzard re-evaluated in its Priest deep dive; see Classes and Talents.

Racials in the beta

The beta put the racials under review. On the third WoW: Forever Podcast, published on Oct 8, 2026, Josh Greenfield said the team was looking at racial abilities, the active Orc and Troll racials in particular, "and how strong they are perhaps a little too strong", and at the weapon skill racials: "Do we want to keep those? Do we want to replace them with something else?" He expected changes to start appearing in the following week's beta build. See Beta.

The Oct 15 beta changes

The changes came in the beta build of Oct 15, 2026, under "Racial abilities have been updated" in Blizzard's development notes. The weapon racials are gone: no race needs a sword, axe or mace for its bonus anymore.

Human Sword Specialization replaced with Ruthless: 2% more critical strike chance
Dwarf Mace Specialization replaced with Earth Fury: 2% more critical damage and healing; Find Treasure also finds extra items in most chests
Orc Axe Specialization replaced with Savage: 1% more critical strike chance; Blood Fury's cooldown up to 3 minutes (was 2); Shatter Curse now dispels Curses and Banes instead of granting immunity, and cuts magic damage taken by 5% (was 15%)
Tauren Endurance now 2% more critical damage and healing (was 1% hit chance); Plainsrunning adds 3% mounted speed but needs real movement ("Stutter-stepping is no longer sufficient"); Cultivation's cooldown 15 minutes (was 60); War Stomp's 90 seconds (was 2 minutes)
Troll Regeneration lets 20% of health regeneration continue in combat (was 10%); Berserking not changed in the notes
Undead Touch of the Grave's chance and cooldown adjusted "to make benefit more consistent"; Will of the Forsaken unusable under Scatter Shot
Gnome Eureka! now an 8-second buff with no charges, and also helps Power Word: Shield
Night Elf Quickness's movement speed now stacks with other speed bonuses
Skyborne Wind Blessed haste 3% (was 1%); Skysight and Read Leyline castable while moving; Walk on Air's cooldown 90 seconds (was 2 minutes)

Earlier builds had already trimmed the Gnome's Eureka! (no longer helping periodic effects, Oct 1) and fixed Will of the Forsaken failing while asleep or charmed (Oct 8). The Oct 15 notes were the last racial changes of the beta, which closed on Oct 23 (Blizzard).

The launch tuning pass

After the beta closed, Blizzard took "a final pass" on racials for launch. Its post of Oct 26, 2026, completed on Oct 27 with changes "that were intended to be listed", answers two complaints: that some new racial traits "feel too generic", and that some are "objectively stronger than others". Blizzard now puts racial identity first, so some races "will naturally be slightly more effective than others at certain combat roles", and where generic racials had replaced role or class ones, it is "rolling those changes back". The weapon racials stay gone: Blizzard says future raid and dungeon loot should not be judged by "required" weapon types (Blizzard).

Human Ruthless 1% critical strike chance (was 2%); The Human Spirit 10% more Spirit (was 5%)
Dwarf Earth Fury removed; new Artisan's Precision: 1% more hit chance with spells and attacks
Orc Savage removed; Command returns, 5% more Warlock and Hunter pet damage; Blood Fury's cooldown back to 2 minutes (was 3)
Tauren Plainsrunning 2% movement speed per stack (was 1%), up to 60% (was 30%), no longer on mounts; Endurance only 5% more health, without its hit and critical damage bonuses
Troll Berserking lasts 15 seconds (was 10)
Undead Touch of the Grave's internal cooldown 15 seconds (was 25)
Skyborne Wind-Blessed haste 2% (was 3%); Read Leyline 50% more mana and health regeneration for 15 seconds (was 100%), not usable under Innervate; Skysight 15% movement speed for 15 seconds (was 10%)

The Skyborne racials gain a reason to visit the world's landmarks: Read Leyline used at a Ley Line also grants Attuned for an hour, which raises its benefit back to 100% more regeneration, and Skysight used at an elemental convergence grants Charged for an hour, which raises it to 30% movement speed. Both persist through death and are removed on entering a raid (Skyborne). Night Elves and Gnomes are not in the post, so their Oct 15 versions stand.

Racials and classes

Which races a class can use still limits racial choice. For Hunters, Cajato counts eight race entries: Orc, Tauren, Troll and Windshaper Skyborne for the Horde, and Human, Dwarf, Night Elf and High Order Skyborne for the Alliance, the Human being one of the new combinations. Cajato advises against picking a damage winner from tooltips alone. How the races pair with classes is covered on New Race and Class Combinations and Classes and Talents.

Frequently asked questions

How many racial abilities does each race have in Forever? Four: two active and two passive, tuned so that every race brings a similar amount of offensive power plus its own utility.

Where are all the racials listed? In this page's launch table. Blizzard has not published one table of its own as of Oct 31, 2026, so it combines Blizzard's notes with the BlizzCon list.

Which races can I play? Human, Dwarf, Night Elf and Gnome for the Alliance, Orc, Undead, Tauren and Troll for the Horde, and the Skyborne, who join either faction at character creation.

Does Will of the Forsaken still give immunity? No. It now breaks charm, fear and sleep effects without granting immunity afterwards.

Are there still weapon racials in Forever? No. The beta build of Oct 15, 2026 removed them, and Blizzard's launch pass of Oct 26 kept them out so that loot is not judged by "required" weapon types. At launch the Human has Ruthless (1% critical strike chance), the Dwarf Artisan's Precision (1% hit chance) and the Orc Command (5% more Warlock and Hunter pet damage), whatever weapon they hold.

Was Blood Fury nerfed? Only for the last week of the beta. The Oct 15, 2026 build raised its cooldown to 3 minutes and weakened Shatter Curse; Blizzard's launch pass, completed on Oct 27, put Blood Fury back to 2 minutes and lengthened the Troll's Berserking to 15 seconds (was 10).

Are these racials final? They are Blizzard's launch versions: the post of Oct 26, 2026, completed on Oct 27, is its "final pass" before launch on Nov 4, 2026. Blizzard can still tune racials after launch.

What are Attuned and Charged in WoW Forever? Skyborne buffs added on Oct 26, 2026. Read Leyline used at a Ley Line grants Attuned and Skysight used at an elemental convergence grants Charged, each for an hour: Attuned raises Read Leyline to 100% more regeneration, Charged raises Skysight to 30% movement speed. Both persist through death and end on entering a raid.
