Beta

The World of Warcraft: Forever beta, which ran from Sep 17, 2026 until 10:00 a.m. PDT on Oct 23: how players got in, the launch-day queues, what each weekly build opened, the level 30 cap since Oct 1, the City of Dalaran, the last weekly build of Oct 15, the action against gold buyers, the Stress Test of Oct 21 on Forever's launch hardware, how the beta ended, and what changed between the beta and launch.

The World of Warcraft: Forever beta ran from Sep 17, 2026 until it closed "forever" at 10:00 a.m. PDT on Friday, Oct 23, 2026, two days later than first planned, ahead of the launch on Nov 4, 2026. Players got in by opting in and being selected, or with the Skyborne Epic Pack or the Warcraft Forever Collection. The test opened at level 20 with the Skyborne, Zephras Isle and two new dungeons; the cap rose to 30 on Oct 1, and the Excavation Site in the Wetlands and the City of Dalaran followed. "This is why we have a beta," Lead Classic Designer Tim Jones said on the first WoW: Forever Podcast on Sep 24: to stress test the servers on many kinds of hardware and fix what breaks, with everyone in the world logging in to a single beta server that is not "representative of how our live servers are architected".

Getting in

Blizzard opened the beta on Sep 17 with an article inviting "community veterans, press, fansites, friends, and family" over the course of the test. Anyone can sign up on the Forever website: "Players who have opted in can be selected to participate, and invitations will go out regularly throughout the test." Selected players receive an email, and their Battle.net account is already flagged for access. MadSeasonShow had told viewers in his Sep 14 summary that other players could "try your luck at just opting in", which Blizzard's article confirmed; before it, Blizzard had described access only through the upgrades covered on Upgrades and Editions.

The Skyborne Epic Pack and the Warcraft Forever Collection include beta access, which can take up to 30 minutes to appear after a purchase; the Skyborne Heroic Pack does not. Players install the "World of Warcraft: Forever Beta" from the In Development list of the Battle.net app. Because invitations attract phishing, Blizzard advises checking that a World of Warcraft: Forever beta license appears under Your Game Accounts on the Battle.net account before trusting an email.

Launch day: queues and records

The beta took longer to open than planned. On Sep 17 Blizzard posted that it was "working through a couple of final issues", and PC Gamer's Tyler Colp reported hour-long queues, writing that players were "reliving 2004". The next day senior game designer Josh Greenfield called it "the craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard and almost 8 years on classic", and senior game producer Tom Ellis explained the disconnects on X: the beta environment "only uses one REGIONAL realm", which became a bottleneck, as GamesRadar reported on Sep 18. Blizzard fixed database and server problems, restarted, and added more worlds.

Demand kept growing. GameSpot reported on Sep 28 that Blizzard had raised the beta's population cap several times; executive producer Holly Longdale wrote that the beta was "setting records", and on Sep 27: "So… we had to increase the WoW: Forever Beta population cap again. The wild ride continues."

The crowds had a famous face. The streamer Asmongold spent the beta building Olympus, a chain of Alliance guilds whose stated goal is "the majority of the players": by his count it passed 70,000 members by Oct 12, and its mass invites, crowded cities and some members' chat drew enough complaints that a player released an add-on to hide it.

Week by week

Sep 17. The beta opened with a level cap of 20, the Skyborne race and Zephras Isle, Hall of Thanes (levels 13 to 18), the Ruins of Lordaeron (levels 15 to 20) and all zone content up to level 20. Blizzard said more zones, dungeons and the new battleground would open as the test went on. A live Q&A ran the same morning.

Sep 24. The first full set of development notes fixed bugs and tuned every class; among the changes, the Druid's Mangle became Primal Bite, players can collect Campfire buffs while sitting or lying down, and for the rest of the beta a talent reset costs 1 silver, more for an hour after each one.

Oct 1. The cap rose to 30, with the new dungeon Excavation Site: Wetlands (listed in the beta as levels 26 to 31) and the original Razorfen Downs and Uldaman. Darnassus and Thunder Bluff gained barbershops, and the Ray Traced Shadows option was removed until it is fixed. The build reworked parts of several classes, removing the Druid's Tiger's Fury in favor of a new talent, Shifting Power, and Blizzard added a further set of Warrior changes to the notes that evening. Creators were posting matches in Darkspear Islands, the new battleground for levels 30 to 60, from early October, Sodapoppin among them on Oct 5, though Blizzard's notes have not announced its opening.

Oct 8. The City of Dalaran opened. Experience from killing creatures in dungeons rose by about 20%, and a bug that cut party experience by the highest-level member was fixed, returning to Classic Era's rule that only each player's own level counts. Classic looting returned, every tester was granted 16 Legacy points so the system can be tried in full, and the Cooldown Manager now supports every class, racial abilities and trinkets.

Oct 15. The largest set of notes, and the last weekly build before the close, rebuilt the racial abilities (the weapon racials gave way to critical strike bonuses; see Races and Racials), added a tutorial for new players and an Auto Attack/Auto Shot setting, and made wands and Auto Shot wait for the player to stand still for half a second, "matching early versions of World of Warcraft". Many party buffs became raid wide, the Mage gained Frost Blast, Elemental Shamans got Elemental Mastery back, Battleground Marks of Honor now stack to 30, and the Horde is "attacked on sight" in Dalaran, though the City of Dalaran dungeon stays open to it.

Gold buyers and bots

Blizzard has made the beta an early test of its stance on real-money trading. On Oct 1 community manager Kaivax wrote that Blizzard had been "continuously actioning" accounts found botting for gold and those that bought or knowingly received it, and that a warning about accepting gold from strangers would appear when trading. On the third podcast episode, on Oct 8, Josh Greenfield said Blizzard had closed over 2,100 accounts that bought gold on the beta and almost 1,600 gold-selling or botting accounts. At the Sep 17 Q&A, Icy Veins reported, Greenfield also confirmed that GDKP raids, where loot is auctioned for gold, will not be allowed in Forever: "the short answer is no".

What Blizzard said it will test

The one system Blizzard named for beta testing before it began is a safeguard built for Hardcore. When the game has to refresh the world around a player because an area has too many or too few players, creatures can suddenly appear around them. Principal Game Designer Kris Zierhut told the Hardcore panel that Forever adds a warning: a countdown from three minutes to "get to somewhere safe", and a button to say "I'm somewhere safe" and move at once. "It'll happen in the whole game, but it's for hardcore," he said.

Lead Software Engineer Nora Mills credited one of the team's engineers with the system and invited the audience to the beta "this Thursday", "at least for non-hardcore", suggesting players could set themselves Hardcore rules if they wished. The panel then confirmed: "We will be testing that system in the beta." Hardcore itself is due after launch.

The developers also left hints for beta players to find. Asked on the Found Photographs panel what the future holds, Josh Greenfield suggested that anyone "playing the beta next Thursday" and feeling adventurous try a corpse run to the entrance of Grim Batol in the eastern Wetlands, where they may notice "a much larger red dragon presence", and added that he did not know "what that's about". He also mentioned a "crater-sized hole" in the content of Azshara, a zone the team has given many new quests.

Talking to testers

Blizzard has kept up a steady stream of beta news. A live Q&A on Sep 17, the beta's first day, answered questions from the forums on the Warcraft Twitch and YouTube channels. The weekly WoW: Forever Podcast followed: Unpacking Beta Launch with Xaryu on Sep 24, Speed Running Classes with Sodapoppin on Oct 1, Dive into Dungeons with Devs with Hammerdance on Oct 8, The PvP Episode with Tips Out and Savix on Oct 15, and the End of Beta Special with Meeix on Oct 22. In the PvP episode Tips Out described the community dueling tournament his team runs on the beta on Oct 17 and 18, which is not an official Blizzard event and drew more than 6,000 sign-ups against the 1,000 expected. Blizzard built its top 32 an arena of their own: the crater of Mount Hyjal, kept as a separate map when the zone was rebuilt, which the developers said may come to the game in a later patch. Class deep dives covering eight of the nine classes appeared on Sep 30 and Oct 7 (see Classes and Talents), and Blizzard detailed Rulesets, two-part names, the Legacy system, the Skyborne and PvP Progression in articles of their own.

The Stress Test

Blizzard's Sep 17 article promised a Server Slam: "At a later point during the test period, we'll also open the servers for several hours so that anyone can access the WoW: Forever beta during that window." On Oct 14 players found a "WoW Forever Stress Test" option in the Battle.net app set for Monday, Oct 19, Massively Overpowered reported from Wowhead, and on Oct 15, 2026 Blizzard confirmed it. On Oct 16 Blizzard moved it: "The WoW: Forever Server Stress Test is moving to October 21 (previously October 19)." It gave no reason. For a limited time on Oct 21, anyone could play World of Warcraft: Forever with no subscription, Game Time, invitation or beta access: it starts at 2:00 p.m. PDT in the Americas and Oceania, 19:00 CEST in Europe, and 5:00 a.m. in Taiwan and 6:00 a.m. in Korea on Oct 22. Players chose the Stress Test under In Development in the Battle.net app's Game Version menu. The beta went offline shortly before and returned after, Blizzard warned the test might end early or run late, and every character, name and guild made in it was to be deleted when it closed, ahead of name reservations; beta characters were not touched. On Oct 20 community manager Kaivax gave the window: Blizzard takes the beta offline and opens Forever "on its proper regional hardware" from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. PDT (19:00 to 03:00 CEST, 18:00 to 02:00 in the UK, and 8:00 a.m. to noon AEDT, 5:00 to 9:00 a.m. in Taipei and 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. in Seoul on Oct 22). Any player with a WoW account can join, and when the Stress Test shuts down its characters and names are deleted and the beta reopens. The same post extended the beta: "We plan to close the WoW Forever Beta … forever at 10:00 a.m. PDT on Friday, October 23." The Stress Test ran on Oct 21 as planned: Kaivax took the beta offline that morning ("The WoW Forever Beta is going offline in a few minutes") and pointed players to the Stress Test entry in the Battle.net app's Game Version selector. When it closed, Blizzard "hit a small snag" bringing the beta back, community manager Zorbrix posted at 6:46 p.m. PDT, and suggested fully exiting the Battle.net app to force the update. Blizzard has posted no figures or findings from the test as of Oct 22, 2026. Invite-A-Friend codes started going out on Oct 20; after the beta, early name reservation runs from Oct 27 to Nov 3, 2026 for players with any upgrade, and Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST (see Release and Roadmap).

How the beta ended

The beta was limited on purpose, the developers said on the End of Beta Special, the fifth WoW: Forever Podcast, on Oct 22, 2026. Forever is meant to last "as long as players want to go on this journey with us", so the team used the test on its foundations: the classes, camping and the server infrastructure that keeps players together. It stopped at level 30 with four of the nine new dungeons and no raids, which leaves the content from level 30 to 60 publicly untested, a trade-off the team said it preferred to opening everything at once and wants to keep for later content.

The test outgrew its plans. It was "one of the biggest betas" Blizzard has run, a developer said on the same episode: on the first day the team watched the player count hit one concurrency cap after another, raising each in turn with the server and Battle.net teams.

Lead Software Engineer Ana Resendez used the episode to explain how Forever groups players without realms. A setting picks a preferred language, and Forever tries to place players with others who speak it, but these are "not hard lines": friends who chose different languages can still group. Clay Stone added that the regions are now the only hard lines, besides the rulesets. A podcast episode on the technology behind it is planned.

On Oct 22, 24 hours before the end, community manager Kaivax announced a farewell celebration of "shenanigans and upheaval" in Zephras Isle, Dun Morogh, Elwynn Forest, Teldrassil, Durotar, Tirisfal Glades and Mulgore, warning that its items and experiences would almost certainly not be part of Forever after launch. The beta closed at 10:00 a.m. PDT on Oct 23, 2026. Kaivax's closing post thanked testers for five weeks of testing and said the team would spend "a few short days" on priority issues and the game service, open character creation on Tuesday, Oct 27, so players can choose a ruleset and reserve names before launch (see Upgrades and Editions for who can reserve), and continue the podcast the following week.

From beta to launch: what changed

The beta has changed what launches on Nov 4, 2026. On the fourth WoW: Forever Podcast, on Oct 15, Tips Out praised large PvP battles without lag but said his raid group would sometimes "spawn into a different group"; a developer answered that the team was "making incremental steps" so players are not "phased out of a group randomly", and hoped to get "as much of that in for the game's launch as possible". The same day's build notes still listed it as a known issue: changing a party "may transfer players to a different world instance". These are the changes Blizzard announced during the test, each from its own posts:

  • Experience and loot (Oct 8). About 20% more experience from creatures killed in dungeons, party experience no longer cut by the highest-level member, and Classic looting back (development notes, Oct 8).
  • Racial abilities rebuilt (Oct 15). Human Ruthless, Orc Savage and Dwarf Earth Fury replaced the weapon specializations, and most races were retuned (development notes, Oct 15). More Blizzard changed some again on Oct 26, 2026 (Blood Fury 2 minutes, Berserking 15 seconds, Touch of the Grave 15-second internal cooldown); see Races and Racials.
  • Classes (Sep 24 to Oct 15). Every weekly build tuned the classes: Primal Bite for the Druid on Sep 24, Shifting Power in place of Tiger's Fury on Oct 1, and on Oct 15 Frost Blast for the Mage, a redesigned Arcane Blast, Elemental Mastery back for Shamans, and Battle Shout, Trueshot Aura, Moonkin Aura, Leader of the Pack and four Shaman totems made raid wide. The beta's 1-silver talent reset was "temporary for the Beta only". More
  • Original pace (Oct 15). Wands and Auto Shot now need half a second standing still before they fire, and players get their level-up messages with stat gains back.
  • New players (Oct 15). A new tutorial, updated in-game tutorials, and a Who list that searches subzones.
  • Dalaran (Oct 15). The Horde is attacked on sight in the open-world city; the dungeon stays open to both factions. More
  • The Skyborne (Oct 7). After testers found the high-definition Skyborne jarring beside the original world, Blizzard reworked the HD Druid forms and promised standard-definition models for early 2027. More
  • Raids (Oct 20). Blizzard's raid overview put all three first raids, Onyxia's Lair included, on Dec 9, 2026, not at launch as a Sep 23 explainer had said. More
  • Gold and GDKP. Thousands of gold-buying and botting accounts were closed on the beta, and GDKP raids will not be allowed (see Gold buyers and bots above).
  • Launch hardware (Oct 21). The Stress Test ran Forever on its regional launch hardware for the first time; Blizzard has posted no findings from it as of Oct 24, 2026.

Not announced yet, as of Oct 24, 2026: whether anything made in the beta carries over (Blizzard's beta article only tells testers to "Create a new test character", every Stress Test character was deleted, and the closing post of Oct 23 does not say), launch-day patch notes, a date for Hardcore, and when Darkspear Islands opens, which no build note has announced.

Before the beta: the BlizzCon demo

Players first got their hands on Forever through a demo on the BlizzCon 2026 show floor. Opening the Deep Dive panel, Clay Stone described what it offered: the start of the leveling journey of the new Skyborne race, or a run through the Drowned City, a new dungeon, "with a few friends".

GameSpot, which played the demo, reported that it could be played on a controller. The game marked controller play as in alpha and in development, but GameSpot found it "works surprisingly well": eight abilities on each trigger and eight more with both held, 24 in all. See Gamepad Support.

Frequently asked questions

When did the World of Warcraft: Forever beta end? At 10:00 a.m. PDT on Friday, Oct 23, 2026, after five weeks. Blizzard had extended it by two days on Oct 20; it was due to end after Oct 21. It began on Sep 17.
