Dungeons

The nine new five-player dungeons of World of Warcraft: Forever, from Hall of Thanes (levels 13 to 18) to Shaper's Terrace (58 to 60), the Drowned City played on the BlizzCon show floor, the four opened in the beta, and the loot changes made to every dungeon.

World of Warcraft: Forever adds nine new five-player dungeons to the original ones, spread across the whole leveling journey from level 13 to level 60. Blizzard announced them at BlizzCon 2026, where the What's Next panel promised that "a living world needs challenges", then toured each dungeon in turn: Hall of Thanes beneath Ironforge, the Ruins of Lordaeron, an excavation site in the Wetlands, the City of Dalaran, the Drowned City, Krol'dok Stronghold, Alcaz Prison, Blackmaw Hold and Shaper's Terrace. The Drowned City was playable on the show floor. Blizzard has also re-examined the loot of every dungeon boss. The two new raids, Hyjal Summit and The Barrow Deeps, open on Dec 9, 2026; see Raids.

Under a clear teal sky, tiers of carved sandstone ruins with arches, statues on plinths and a pointed tower stretch across the view, behind a cobbled path where a large green scaled creature lies slumped. Leafless pale trees stand in the grass at right, and the hull and broken masts of a ship sit on the ruins at far left.

The places and ranges are from Blizzard's dungeon article (Blizzard), and its Oct 29, 2026 article for returning players calls them "five-player" dungeons spanning levels 13 to 60 (Blizzard). Blizzard's community manager Kaivax posted these level ranges on Sep 15, 2026, after a wrong range for Krol'dok Stronghold had been repeated in various places since BlizzCon: "In WoW: Forever, Krol'dok Stronghold will be for levels 40-45." The beta build of Oct 1 lists the Excavation Site for levels 26 to 31.

Levels 13 to 33

Hall of Thanes lies deep beneath Ironforge: the final resting place of the dwarven monarchs of old, long tended and left undisturbed until someone broke in. The presenter suspects the Dark Iron dwarves and suggests Alliance adventurers of levels 13 to 18 root out the intruders, warning that ghostly whispers echo through the corridors. The Horde, whom no dwarf would let into a sacred burial chamber, will need to sneak in or carve their way through.

A dark stone hall with interlaced carvings on its pillars and huge statues of bearded, helmeted figures on either side leads past a square pool edged in riveted metal to a red-carpeted staircase with lit braziers and a carved doorway at the top. A faint pale figure stands at the foot of the stairs, and a lantern hangs from the vaulted ceiling.

The Ruins of Lordaeron are the Horde's counterpart. The Forsaken have been working to restore the city Arthas and the Scourge devastated, full of heirlooms and keepsakes of those who never escaped. Scourge still lurk in its darkest corners, a necromancer has moved in, and the signs point to an attack on another city. Horde players of about levels 15 to 20 can help the Forsaken reclaim the ruins; Alliance players may need to find a way to sneak in. Forsaken Paladins, who train at Bandarion Keep in Tirisfal Glades, are covered on New Race and Class Combinations.

Beneath a green sky with a pale moon, a huge hunched creature with pale, torn flesh and a bony, fanged face walks across grass between tall pines and the stone walls of ruined buildings. Smaller skeletal figures stand in the mist behind it.

On a round carved plinth at left, a stone statue of a bare-chested man holding a staff stands before a high stone wall with a pointed turret, under a glowing green sky. A single lamp post glows green on the overgrown grass, and dark trees and a small roofed shrine frame the scene.

In the Wetlands, just above Whelgar's Excavation, lies a dig site "trapped in time" where adventurers must brave errant Titan constructs. Little is known about it: a strange mist drifts down from the mountains and flashing lights have been seen on the horizon. The presenter recommends levels 24 to 29 and expects the Explorers' League to be interested in the findings.

The bleached skull of a big horned animal lies half sunk among golden reeds in dark marsh water, with a crocodile-like creature low in the water behind it. Trees with flat, layered canopies, one draped in hanging moss, rise over smooth gray boulders under a pale violet sky.

The City of Dalaran in the Alterac Mountains was hidden by the Kirin Tor behind a magical barrier while they restored it after Warcraft III, and the barrier is now down. Enchantments are backfiring, arcane constructs are going haywire, demonic energy is running rampant, and there are cats everywhere. Adventurers of around levels 28 to 33 can lend the mages a hand, and "this isn't just a dungeon", the presenter adds: there is a whole city to explore.

Sandstone steps lead up to a grand gateway with twisting carved pillars and purple banners marked with an eye, where two figures in purple robes stand in an archway filled with a swirling pink and blue rune circle. A bulky pink construct stands on each side, and an orange winged creature flies across the violet sky at top right.

Mid-level dungeons

The Drowned City is a set of ancient troll ruins off the coast of Stranglethorn Vale that had lain under the waves, home to sea creatures, until they suddenly rose out of the ocean. It appears to be a city; trolls and naga have been seen there, and a pirate ship seems to have crashed into it. The presenter suggests levels 35 to 40 and invited the BlizzCon audience to try it at the World of Warcraft demo area.

Branching pink coral trees and dark purple coral clumps rise from shallow, sunlit water over a pale sandy floor, framing a view to the horizon. In the middle distance a wooden ship with broken masts lies tilted on a rolling turquoise wave near low rocks, under a bright sun in a teal sky.

Krol'dok Stronghold is in The Riverglades, the new mid-level zone. Introducing the zone, Blizzard called it "an enormous outdoor dungeon" where a powerful ogre civilization is up to very questionable business, and joked that players might like an option other than running Scarlet Monastery for the 25th time.

Ogre outrunners have been kidnapping people in the Riverglades, and weird chanting has been heard from the stronghold at twilight, perhaps from cultists. Reports after BlizzCon gave its level range in different ways until Blizzard settled it on Sep 15: levels 40 to 45, between the Drowned City and Alcaz Prison.

A gray-skinned ogre holding a spiked mace stands on a rocky rise at left, while more ogres gather on the path through a large rock arch flanked by dark banners on poles. Behind them rise tall towers with spiked roofs and fur trim, lit by torches against a pale blue sky.

Alcaz Prison is famous as the place where the Defias Brotherhood is rumored to have held high-ranking nobles for ransom, possibly even King Varian Wrynn. Players could visit it in the past but never go inside; in Forever they can. The Defias and the naga are fighting inside, so a group of around levels 48 to 53 should move while they are distracted.

Two green, spined naga with serpent tails rise in the foreground of a long, dark corridor of stone walls and heavy wooden beams draped in hanging weed. More naga and scattered bones fill the far end, lit by wall torches, and a rack holding a polearm and a sword stands against the right-hand wall.

Levels 55 to 60

Blackmaw Hold lies behind a gate in Azshara that players have long wondered about. Beyond it is a great furbolg city, whose people may be struggling to stave off some sort of corruption. It is for levels 55 to 60, and its tunnels run deep and far into the mountain, towards the Barrow Deeps raid.

A dark-furred, bear-like furbolg with a feather in its fur and a spear crouches on a small wooden jetty over still water, next to a rack of hanging fish and wicker fish traps. On the shore beyond, a pale furbolg sits by a lean-to shelter with a small fire, among tall trees with red and gold leaves.

Shaper's Terrace, in the hills of Un'Goro Crater, is described as perhaps the most treacherous of the new locations. The name recalls an old Titan facility in Sholazar Basin from Wrath of the Lich King Classic; this one is a place seemingly untouched by time, with Titan buildings, wildlife roaming among power crystals and "a whole lot like Jurassic Park", as the presenter quotes. It is for levels 58 to 60.

Under a huge overhanging canopy of leaves, a dark stone building with rounded domes and two arched doors is wrapped in green vines, with clusters of glowing yellow crystals and a red sail-backed reptile at its base. Fern trees stand on both sides of a muddy path, and three winged reptiles fly across the pale green sky.

The Drowned City on the show floor

The Drowned City was the dungeon Blizzard let BlizzCon visitors play. Opening the Deep Dive panel, associate production director Clay Stone hoped attendees had tried the demo on the show floor and "taken on" the Drowned City with a few friends. What creators recorded there is an in-development BlizzCon build, not the version players will get at launch.

Xaryu played the show-floor build as a Fire Mage in a group of streamers. As they set off, the group calls out "Drowned City", and one player warns that "this place is actually hard". His video of Sep 13, 2026 is titled as a first look at a level 40 dungeon, which fits the Drowned City's 35 to 40 range.

Deeper in, the group reacts to the look of the place ("this looks really cool") and to a shark circling in the water below, wondering whether there is an underwater fight.

Sunlight shines through a large arch of wet gray rock onto a sandy cove, where huge pale rib bones and vertebrae of an enormous skeleton curve around a shallow pool. Long strands of seaweed hang from the rock above, and a small red crab sits at the water's edge.

The shark is level 45, well above the group, and dropping down to the fish-like enemies below it turns up a rare spawn, which the players take to be a "super rare" nobody had killed yet.

Their first pull on the shark goes badly: the tank's taunt misses and a tail swipe kills the tank in one hit. The group concludes it needs "more gear, more skill, more keybinds".

With the demo's time running out, the group decides it cannot kill the shark and goes looking for a different boss, ending the session asking for more time.

Esfand ran the same dungeon as a Retribution Paladin testing the new talents. Looking around the area, he says something about it "does feel like a retail dungeon", then confirms for his viewers that the dungeon is the Drowned City.

Esfand calls it a level 38 dungeon and jokes that the demo had existed for about five hours and players had already found a safe spot in it.

Later his group gets a boss stuck on some stairs, where it stops targeting anyone, and they decide to skip it: a bug in the show-floor build.

Esfand's verdict is mixed. He likes the new lighting, saying Blizzard found a way to update the graphics without making them look like modern WoW (see Graphics and Visuals), but still feels the dungeon's design is "kind of retaily". Swimming through a flooded passage, the group has to look for an air bubble to breathe.

In the beta

The beta, which ran from Sep 17 to Oct 23, 2026, added the new dungeons a few at a time. Hall of Thanes and the Ruins of Lordaeron were part of its first week, with the original dungeons up to level 20. The build of Oct 1 raised the level cap to 30 and opened Excavation Site: Wetlands, listed there for levels 26 to 31, along with the original Razorfen Downs and Uldaman; the City of Dalaran followed on Oct 8. The same build of Oct 8 raised the experience from killing creatures in dungeons by about 20% and fixed a bug that reduced party experience when a higher-level player was in the group. See Beta.

How much experience dungeons should give was the beta's big argument in early October. Encounter designer Rowan Ryder told the third WoW: Forever Podcast, published on Oct 8, that the team does not want a dungeon to be "one and done", but that "just grinding dungeons isn't the optimal way to play it": there should be reasons to go out into the world. Josh Greenfield then announced the 20% increase, aiming for the "sweet spot where it feels good to do it, but it's not the optimal thing to do", rather than a game of running Scarlet Monastery's Cathedral 50 times from level 30 to 50.

Asked whether the City of Dalaran, with its many bosses, is a mega dungeon, the encounter designers said no: it is "a very compressed space that fits in a lot of content", in a place that was already bounded, and "there are other WoW Forever dungeons that are at least four times as big as Dalaran".

The first plan had the Alliance and the Horde enter Dalaran by different routes. The team chose one way in for both, sneaking through the sewers, for a more cohesive story and the moment of coming out and looking up at the city; faction-specific quests and stories remain, converging on the same ending. The beta notes of Oct 15 added that "Members of the Horde are no longer welcome in Dalaran under any circumstances and will be attacked on sight": the Horde questline for the Dalaran Sewer Key still leads to the dungeon, but not to the open city (Blizzard).

Dalaran also tested the team's view on immunities. Testers playing Arcane Mages complained they could not hit anything; the designers' answer is that creatures should act as players would expect, so an arcane elemental resists arcane, while every class keeps tools to get through. Other dungeons challenge groups differently, the Excavation Site with diseases and bleeds, so that "every class kind of gets their time to shine".

The group finder was changing to the end of the beta: its notes of Oct 15 fixed the eligibility shown for parties of mixed levels and the "Show All Level Ranges" checkbox. Groups can include only players on the same ruleset and faction, Blizzard's starter guide says.

How dungeons play

Blizzard wants dungeon gameplay to stay tactical. Principal game designer Kris Zierhut said on the Deep Dive panel that crowd control matters: players need to polymorph, banish, root and trap enemies to protect the healer and keep the tank from being overrun. Threat matters too, because tanks can hold only three or four targets at once, so a group "can't pull a whole dungeon all at once". The class changes behind this are on Classes and Talents.

Blizzard's Launch Dungeons video

On Oct 14, 2026 Blizzard posted "Launch Dungeons", a narrated four-minute tour of three of the nine. It describes them as built on Vanilla's dungeon design: "clear pulls, real stakes, valuable quests, and necessary teamwork".

Hall of Thanes, the first dungeon for Alliance characters, sits directly beneath Ironforge's throne room and is meant, like the Horde's Ragefire Chasm, to teach group play. Dark Iron dwarves have tunneled in to loot the tombs of Ironforge's kings, and the restless spirits they woke stalk the vault with them. Patrols drift through the halls, healers have to manage mana across a whole run, and beating the first boss, Faldrim Anvilmar, opens the gates deeper in, toward the final vault.

The Ruins of Lordaeron play out almost entirely outdoors, across the castle and its ruins, which makes the dungeon a showcase of Forever's new lighting: moving light, deep shadows and rolling fog. Blizzard's advice is to pull enemies back to lit, open ground so that none hides in the fog. Players clear the Scourge, free spirits bound to the ruins and end at the necromancer at its heart, Rath'mael.

Excavation Site: Wetlands sends players after a dwarven dig that went wrong, across open water, past bones and spiders, and through tall grass where several kinds of raptor nest, some of them stealthed: "keep your Healer out of the grass". The video ends on Dalaran, entered through its toxic sewers because the Kirin Tor do not yet trust outsiders, and adds that Forever refreshes nearly every Vanilla dungeon with updated rewards and more quest experience.

Loot and rewards

Every dungeon boss has had its loot re-examined. Zierhut said items have been upgraded to rare quality, many new items added and weaker old items improved, while the standout favorites stay. Blizzard's recap adds that unique dungeon boss items are now blue and their set bonuses improved, and that hundreds of new drops have been added. See Items and Stats.

Some of the new crafting recipes come from dungeons too: Blizzard's Deep Dive recap says advanced blueprint recipes drop from specific dungeon bosses; see Professions.

Blizzard has also made sure transmog does not change how groups roll. Josh Greenfield explained that any bind on pickup uncommon or rare gear that drops in a dungeon grants its appearance to every eligible looter, so a player who only wants the look has no reason to roll against someone who needs the upgrade. Epic raid drops grant their appearance only to the player who loots them; see Transmogrification.

Original dungeons

The original dungeons remain, and some gain new reasons to visit. In Shen'dralas, the new area near Desolace, players continue storylines of the Gelkis and Magram centaur tribes and find new reasons to go to dungeons such as Maraudon and Razorfen Downs. What Blizzard has said about the rest, Deadmines to Scholomance, is on Original Dungeons and Raids.
