Items and Stats
Itemization in World of Warcraft: Forever: combined hit and critical strike, rebalanced weapon skill, healing gear with bonus damage, spell power on caster weapons, situational trinkets, zone and creature effects, reworked dungeon loot, quest rewards and world-drop epics.
World of Warcraft: Forever merges hit and critical strike into one chance each for melee, ranged and spells, keeps weapon skill with less on each item, makes healing gear add damage, and reworks loot across the whole game. On Blizzard's Deep Dive panel at BlizzCon 2026, the presenter of the combat and items section, introduced as a 21-year veteran of World of Warcraft, said the aim was to "unsolve the game": after years of Classic, players know the perfect paths and which items to get, so Forever changes itemization throughout to let them "solve it again". The team wanted many different choices for gearing a character, varying by class, by the kind of fight and by where a player goes. Forever keeps all of Classic's stats with a few changes and adds some that came in later expansions, though not resilience.

Hit and critical strike
In WoW Classic, hit chance was separate for melee, ranged attacks and spells, which the designer called awkward for an Enhancement Shaman, a Retribution Paladin or even a Warrior who needs taunts to land. Forever unifies it: hit counts for all types of attack at once. That helps hybrid classes, but also Rogues landing poisons, Hunters landing traps and Warriors landing taunts. Critical strike chance is merged in exactly the same way. Blizzard's recap describes both as spell, melee and ranged chances "combined".
Weapon skill
Weapon skill, the designer said, was probably the strongest stat in Classic, especially for melee, but "a little too easy to get and a little too strong". The Burning Crusade removed it; Forever keeps it and rebalances it instead. A single item cannot carry quite as much weapon skill as before, but the stat still works and is still very valuable.
Racial abilities show the same change. Weapon skill racials used to help only melee and were too strong; the panel's Dwarf example gave 1% critical strike chance to spells, melee and ranged abilities with a mace equipped. That did not last: the beta build of Oct 15, 2026 replaced Mace, Sword and Axe Specialization with general bonuses, and on Oct 26 Blizzard said it is "not healthy in the long run for future raid and dungeon loot tables to be evaluated through the lens of 'required' weapon types", so they stay gone. The Dwarf now has Artisan's Precision, 1% hit chance with spells and attacks. Racials are covered on Races and Racials.
Healers, casters and tanks
Healers had a familiar problem in Classic: after earning a full set of healing gear in a raid, they went out questing and "can't kill anything". In Forever all healing items also come with bonus damage, so healers can enjoy the whole game. Blizzard's recap gives the ratio: bonus healing now also includes one third as much bonus damage.
Forever also adds stats that did not exist in Classic. One reduces the chance for a character's attacks to be parried or dodged, which the designer said does "double duty" for tanks. Spellcaster weapons now grant bonus spell damage and healing all the way down to level 10, so spellcasters care about their weapons as much as Warriors and Rogues do.
Spirit becomes more useful too. Every class that deals damage or heals with mana will have talents or abilities that return mana based on Spirit, so, as the designer put it, "spirit is worth having on your gear", particularly for Holy Paladins and Restoration Shamans. Class changes are covered on Classes and Talents and Paladin.
Trinkets and special effects
Trinkets were a big area of change. Blizzard wants more variety and more ways to solve problems, so trinkets are now more specialized and aimed at particular situations, giving players "a bag full of tricks" for different encounters. Forever also adds two new classes of item effects: some that work only, or work better, in certain areas such as mountains, deserts, cities or caverns, and others with bonus effects against particular kinds of creature, such as a sword shown on stage that does extra damage to undead.
The What's Next panel previewed some of these. Blizzard promised "hundreds of brand new items", with on-use and on-equip effects, and joked about a piece of sharpened cutlery that can be equipped as a thrown weapon and a grave robber's shovel. It also showed updated existing items, including a charm that is now especially effective against certain sea dwellers and a hat that adds healing and damage and shortens the cast time of resurrection spells.
Dungeon loot and world drops
Blizzard describes a massive rework of items across the entire game. Every dungeon boss has had its loot re-examined, many new items have been added, and old items that were not good enough have been improved, while the standout favorites remain. Blizzard's recap says unique dungeon boss items are now blue (Rare) quality and set bonuses have been improved. Dungeons are covered on Dungeons.
World-drop epics have all been revisited too. The designer said an epic drop is an exciting moment, but in Classic the items were often disappointing, so they have all been made much stronger and more useful, whether a player keeps one, gives it to a friend or sells it at the auction house. A few new world-drop epics were added, including a thrown weapon. Blizzard's recap adds that hundreds of new drops have been added, including from rare creatures.
On the "Go Again!" Hardcore panel, a developer added that there are new rare spawns all over the world with items that drop only from them, alongside new world drops and new things to craft, so that old leveling routes "aren't necessarily going to be the best" any more.
Quest rewards
New quest rewards have been added across the board, with more itemization for hybrid specializations than ever before. Blizzard's first example is a quest well known to Alliance players: in Duskwood, a group kills the undead soldier Mor'ladim, and at the end the reward is a two-handed sword, which is great for a Warrior or Paladin but not for anyone else. In Forever Mor'ladim's quest also hands back his heirloom family ring, a spell power ring.
The second example is Hemet Nesingwary in Stranglethorn Vale, whose quests end with a choice of Master Hunter's ranged weapons. He now also offers a Master Hunter's Wand and a Master Hunter's Spellsword designed for Retribution Paladins, with strength and spell damage together. Quests are covered on Quests, and crafted gear on Professions.
Changes in the beta
The weekly development notes kept tuning items as testers played. These are beta facts, and Blizzard has not published launch patch notes as of Oct 31, 2026:
- Spell ranks. On Oct 1 the character sheet began explaining that ranks vastly below your level get less from Spell Damage and Healing and have a reduced chance to activate class abilities and talents, down to 0% for a Rank 1 Frostbolt's Frostbite at level 60.
- Wands and oils. Wands stopped gaining damage from spell damage on Sep 24, when Minor, Lesser and plain Wizard Oil returned to Classic Era values of 8, 16 and 24 spell power. On Oct 15, wands were made to wait for the user to stand still for 0.5 seconds.
- Quest rewards. On Oct 8 various dungeon quest rewards dropped from Rare to Uncommon, with stats to match, and the new Gelkis and Magram rewards in Desolace were retuned to level 35.
- Consumables. Scrolls take a global cooldown (Oct 15), and damage from Discolored Healing Potions no longer breaks crowd control (Oct 8).
- Wolfshead Helm. It now grants 5 Energy when Shifting Power is used, keeping its Rage effect (Oct 8).
- Selling. Selling a Bind on Equip item with an uncollected appearance to a vendor soulbinds it (Oct 1), and many crafted items sell for less (Oct 15). See Gold Guide.
What creators noticed
GuideMMO, in a round-up published on Sep 14, 2026, singled out healer items gaining spell damage as the change he most looked forward to, since healers will be able to farm gold in the open world. He also expected that Edgemaster's Handguards will no longer be the best gloves for Warriors, a reading of the weapon skill changes rather than something Blizzard has stated.
Riyani, working from show-floor reports in a video of Sep 13, 2026, thought Blizzard had stepped away from weapon skill because racials no longer grant it, and expected it to disappear from gear. Blizzard said on the Deep Dive panel that weapon skill stays, with less on each item.

Can healers deal damage with healing gear? Yes. Bonus healing now also gives bonus damage, a third as much according to Blizzard's recap.
Does Forever add resilience? No. Blizzard said resilience is not being added.
Do weapon racials still exist in WoW Forever? No. Blizzard removed them in the beta and said on Oct 26, 2026 that they are unhealthy for future loot tables.
Do wands benefit from spell damage? No, as of the beta build of Sep 24, 2026.
Are dungeon drops better? Every dungeon boss's loot was re-examined, unique boss items are now blue quality with better set bonuses, and hundreds of new drops were added.
