Best Class
There is no official best class in World of Warcraft: Forever: Blizzard's stated goal is that all 27 talent trees are worth bringing to a dungeon or raid. How to choose by role, faction and play style, what Blizzard changed for each class, what creators said, and which classes beta players picked most.
World of Warcraft: Forever has no single best class, and Blizzard designed it that way: "Our goal was to make sure that every single one of our 27 talent trees is a viable option to bring to your dungeon or raid group," principal game designer Kris Zierhut told the Deep Dive panel at BlizzCon 2026, while no class or specialization should be so strong that groups want to stack it. The classes are "not equal": each brings different strengths and weaknesses. So the right class depends on the role a player wants (tank, healer or damage), the faction and race they want to play, and how they like to fight. Among beta characters, the Hunter was the most created class, by the count of third-party sites that Massively Overpowered reported on Oct 15, 2026. Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026 (see Launch Time), the beta stopped at level 30, and Blizzard was still changing racials on Oct 26, so as of Oct 31, 2026 any ranking is provisional.

How Blizzard balances the classes
Every class has a damage budget. On the second WoW: Forever Podcast, on Oct 1, 2026, the class designers explained that boss fights should last about as long as they did in 2004 and 2005, so each class has "a target amount of damage they need to do". Blizzard has raised the budget of the hybrid classes so they are "competitive with the pure specs", and every buff must now be paid for somewhere else: a buff to the Druid's Wrath, worth about 2% of a level 60 Druid's damage, meant "at some future point, we'll probably take Druid down a notch somewhere".
Forever drops the old hybrid tax. The designers said that in the original game hybrids did less damage but brought unique buffs and utility, then had their damage raised anyway, until the pure classes asked "what about us?". In Forever, "everybody's damage or healing or tanking is competitive", and it is the hybrids that lack some tools and buffs the pure classes have.
There is still a small price for flexibility. "We think the right numbers around 5% less damage on our hybrid DPS specs," the designers said, and "pretty much everyone who's not a hunter, a mage, a rogue, or a warlock is a hybrid": a Warrior can "strap on a shield, go defensive stance, and save the day". A player who only ever wants to deal damage gives up nothing by choosing a pure class; a player who wants to switch roles pays about 5%.
Classes also stay simple. Zierhut said each class starts from its fantasy, "what is that class about", and that the core rotation, the abilities used more often than every 10 seconds, should ideally have "three or four buttons". A second designer added that classes "like Mage" were coming up "a little short" at the time and that the team was working on them. Blizzard published its changes for every class in deep dives on Sep 30, Oct 7 and Oct 15, 2026 (see Classes and Talents).
Choosing by role
The longer answers are on Best Tank, Best Healer, Best DPS, Best Leveling Class and Best PvP Class.
Every role matters in Forever's dungeons. Crowd control matters, Blizzard said at BlizzCon: groups need to "polymorph, banish, root, trap" enemies to protect the healer, and "our tanks can only do threat on three or four targets at once. You can't pull a whole dungeon all at once."
- Tank: Warrior, Paladin or Druid. The Warrior keeps Defensive Stance and gains more reliable Rage; the Paladin gets a new tanking seal, Seal of Fury, with Consecration baseline at level 20 (see Paladin); the Druid tanks in Bear Form, where potions and most consumables now work.
- Healer: Priest, Paladin, Shaman or Druid. Blizzard says every class that deals damage and heals with mana gets talents or abilities returning mana based on Spirit.
- Damage: any class. Hunter, Mage, Rogue and Warlock are the four pure damage classes; Warrior, Paladin, Shaman, Priest and Druid each have damage trees at about 5% less.
The Warrior has a stated specialty. "I want warriors to be the kings of cleave damage," Zierhut said on Oct 1: Paladins get some area damage from Consecration but no Divine Storm, Feral Druids get no Swipe, and Shamans spend heavy mana on Fire Nova or Chain Lightning, so "when you have that fight where you're attacking multiple bosses or lots of adds at once, warrior will be the strongest". The same episode brought back extra Rage from critical strikes (75% more, not double) after Warriors complained.
What each class gets in Forever
Blizzard's deep dives and beta notes list the headline changes; launch patch notes have not been published as of Oct 31, 2026.
| Class | Roles | Forever's headline changes |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Tank, damage | More reliable Rage; Arms weapon specializations merged into Weaponmaster; Improved Battle Shout and Improved Demoralizing Shout baseline; Fury reworked in the beta |
| Paladin | Tank, healer, damage | Holy Strike at level 6; Judgment no longer consumes the Seal; Seal of Fury; Consecration baseline; Undead Paladins for the Horde |
| Hunter | Damage | Aimed Shot baseline at 20; traps usable in combat; pets scale with the Hunter's gear; foxes; Sniper Shot at 45 yards; open to Humans |
| Rogue | Damage | More poison charges; Sap no longer breaks Stealth; one-handed axes; Combat's weapon specializations merged into Hack and Slash |
| Priest | Healer, damage | Fear Ward and Devouring Plague for every Priest; Divine Spirit baseline at 30; Shadow Word: Death at 32; open to Gnomes |
| Shaman | Healer, damage | Totems on a 1-second global cooldown and lasting five minutes; preset totem sets; Elemental Mastery back as a 31-point talent since Oct 15 (Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst cast 0.5 seconds faster, Chain Lightning loses its cooldown); open to Dwarves and Horde Skyborne |
| Mage | Damage | Frostfire Bolt at 40 for Fire and Frost hybrid builds; the Comprehension skill; open to Orcs and Alliance Skyborne |
| Warlock | Damage | Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom become Banes alongside a curse; Firestone and Spellstone become weapon imbues; open to Trolls |
| Druid | Tank, healer, damage | Consumables and racials work in forms; Tiger's Fury replaced by Shifting Power; Mangle renamed Primal Bite |
The details, and creators' readings of each talent tree, are on Classes and Talents; the Paladin has a page of its own, Paladin.
Race, faction and the new pairings
Picking a class now also means picking from more races. Forever adds six pairings: Gnome Priests, Human Hunters, Dwarf Shamans, Orc Mages, Troll Warlocks and Undead Paladins, with more "planned to come in future content", and the Skyborne can be Shamans on the Horde side and Mages on the Alliance side. At BlizzCon each race had two active and two passive racials "tuned to give each race an equal similar amount of offensive power", with a Dwarf bonus tied to holding a mace. That design did not survive the beta: the weapon specialization racials went in the Oct 15 build, and Blizzard's "final pass" of Oct 26, 2026 chose racial identity, which "means that some races will naturally be slightly more effective than others at certain combat roles". For launch the Dwarf has Artisan's Precision (1% hit with spells and attacks), the Human's Ruthless gives 1% critical strike chance, the Orc's Command gives Warlock and Hunter pets 5% damage and Blood Fury is on a 2-minute cooldown, the Troll's Berserking lasts 15 seconds, and the Undead's Touch of the Grave has a 15-second internal cooldown (Blizzard forums). See Best Race for Each Class, New Race and Class Combinations and Races and Racials.
Racials were still moving at the beta's midpoint. On the third podcast, on Oct 8, 2026, Josh Greenfield said the team was looking at active racials such as the Orc's and the Troll's, "perhaps a little too strong", and at whether to keep weapon skill racials at all; the Oct 15 and Oct 26 notes then settled both. Faction matters more than race in any case: Horde and Alliance cannot group, and on the PvP ruleset a player keeps all characters on one faction (see Rulesets).
Class tools in dungeons
Some dungeons favor some classes, by design. Blizzard's encounter designers said on the Oct 8 podcast that creatures act as players expect, so an arcane elemental in the City of Dalaran resists Arcane damage, though "even if you're spec arcane, you have tools that you can use to get through the dungeon". In the Excavation Site, a group without someone to remove diseases or stop bleeds finds them "particularly punishing", and other dungeons test groups in other ways. A balanced group, with dispels, cures and crowd control, matters more than any single class.
Leveling
Forever levels at about Classic's pace whatever the class. Xaryu, on the first podcast on Sep 24, compared a level 14 Gnome Mage in Forever with the same character in Classic Era at the same spot in Westfall: the time played was "within a few minutes" of each other. Blizzard's beta data put the average time to level 20 at 20.5 hours, against 20.4 in Classic Era (see Leveling Guide and Best Leveling Class).
Xaryu, who leveled a Mage in the beta, said on the same episode that the class is "really fun" but "needs maybe a little bit of tweaking", and that trying to design a better rotation himself left him with "a lot of respect" for class designers. Blizzard's Mage deep dive followed on Oct 7 with Frostfire Bolt and shorter Cone of Cold.
What creators said
Creators judged the talent trees from the BlizzCon demo, before the beta changed many of them, and every verdict below is theirs, on the date given. PvP has its own page, Best PvP Class.
- Countdown (Sep 13, 2026), in a two-hour review of every tree, named the Warlock the overall winner of the talent trees and Holy Paladin, Discipline Priest, Affliction Warlock and Demonology Warlock its favorites, and was "down on" only Assassination Rogue.
- Uncas (Sep 15, 2026) rated the Warrior the class with the fewest major changes and expected it to stay at or near the top, and expected Enhancement Shaman to be one of the strongest damage specializations, especially while leveling.
- Riyani (Sep 14, 2026), surveying the tanks, said threat matters and it was too early to say which tank would come out on top.
- Xaryu (Sep 24, 2026) found the Mage fun but in need of tweaks, as above.
None of these rests on level 60 play in Forever: the beta stopped at level 30.
What beta players picked
The most popular class in the beta was the Hunter. Third-party sites tracked more than a million characters created in the beta, Massively Overpowered reported on Oct 15, 2026: Hunters made up 15.6%, followed by Warriors, Paladins and Druids, while Warlocks (9.1%) and Priests (9.2%) were the least created. These are outside counts of the characters those sites could see, not Blizzard's figures, and beta players try combinations they may not keep at launch. Popularity is not power, either: a less common class can find groups more easily in roles that are short of players.
