Transmogrification
Transmogrification in World of Warcraft: Forever: an opt-in system that Classic Mode switches off, appearances shared with every eligible looter of dungeon drops but not raid epics, same-armor-type and level rules, and hidden helms and cloaks.
Transmogrification (transmog) lets a character show the appearance of one item over another, and in World of Warcraft: Forever it is entirely optional. Blizzard's associate production director announced it on the What's Next panel at BlizzCon 2026 knowing the topic divides Classic players: some had waited for it, others did not want it anywhere near "Classic Plus". Blizzard's answer was to offer both. Players who turn transmog on see everyone looking their best; players who, especially in world PvP, want to see others "for who they truly are and what they've accomplished" can turn it off and see what everyone is actually wearing, which he summed up as "clown suits for everyone". Transmog is one of the clearest differences between Forever and the original game recreated in WoW Classic.

Opting out
On the Deep Dive panel, a senior designer called transmog an important tool for those who want to show off their accomplishments or express their character, but said Blizzard recognizes the system "is not for everyone": many players appreciate seeing their own and others' gear progression reflected in how characters actually look. So Forever lets players engage with it as little or as much as they like, and opt out in a few ways. The first is simply speaking to an NPC and disabling transmog; Blizzard's written recap says a transmogrifier in certain cities lets players configure outfits or disable the system entirely.
The second is the mode selector that greets a player on first logging in. It sets a preset of a handful of settings, any of which can be changed later, and choosing Classic Mode disables the visibility of other players' transmog as soon as the player enters the game. "The goal here is to allow you to play the game as if transmog does not exist at all," the designer said. Blizzard's Modern and Classic visual presets are covered on Graphics and Visuals.
GameSpot, playing the show-floor demo on Sep 14, 2026, confirmed the practical effect: players who do not want transmog "can just literally turn all that off", not only for themselves but for everyone else, so another player's outfit shows "what they are actually wearing".
Collecting appearances
Blizzard also looked at how collecting appearances changes the way groups loot. The designer's example was a dungeon run in Stratholme where the Mask of the Unforgiven drops, a leather helm anyone would like in their collection: should a player who needs it as an upgrade worry about someone rolling on it only for its looks? "The short answer is no." Any bind-on-pickup Uncommon or Rare gear that drops in a dungeon grants its appearance to all eligible looters when it is looted.
So nobody needs to roll against anybody for an appearance: "Everybody just gets it." Epic drops in raids are different. Blizzard expects raid groups to have an organized loot system, as they have for years, so the appearance of an epic item is granted only to the player who loots it and binds it, "to preserve the uniqueness and prestige of epic appearances". The loot itself, including the reworked dungeon drops, is covered on Items and Stats.
Rules for using transmog
For those who use it, the basic functionality will look familiar to players of modern WoW's current expansion, Midnight, but with "slightly more classic modifications and restrictions". Gear can only be transmogrified to an item of the same type, plate to plate or cloth to cloth: a Holy Paladin wearing a cloth robe needs another cloth chest to change its look. To make that workable, a single saved outfit can hold different armor appearance types per slot, so an outfit can include, say, both leather and mail gloves in case an upgrade found in the field does not match what the character is wearing.
Low-level characters cannot transmog to high-level items either, because Blizzard wants "your silhouette to be relative to your level". Once a character reaches max level, all level restrictions are lifted, and any item in the collection that is valid for the equipped items can be used. The main exception is items such as PvP gear that require conditions like a rank: a player needs the required rank to use that appearance.
Where to transmog and how to collect
Warcraft Tavern's transmog guide puts the transmogrifiers in the capitals: Fyrenz Vishonar in the Mage District of Stormwind for the Alliance and Mon'ye in the Cleft of Shadows of Orgrimmar for the Horde. Their dialogue has the option that switches transmog off, which costs nothing and can be undone at any time (Warcraft Tavern).
- Quest rewards count in full. Finishing a quest that offers a choice of gear unlocks the appearance of every option, not only the one taken.
- Bind-on-pickup and gray or white items are collected as soon as they are picked up. A bind-on-equip item must be equipped (so that it binds) or sold to a vendor before its look is collected.
- Group rolls count. Being in the dungeon group when a piece is rolled on unlocks it, which is Blizzard's shared-looter rule seen from the player's side; raid epics stay with the winner, as above.
- Collect beyond your armor. A character can collect appearances it cannot wear, but can only apply them to items of the same armor or weapon type.
- Open Collections from the micromenu or with Shift+P.
Outfits are tied to slots, not items: a character starts with two free outfit slots, extra slots cost gold, and outfits can be swapped for free outside combat, so an upgrade found mid-dungeon keeps the look already chosen for that slot (Warcraft Tavern).
Helms, cloaks and players who opt out
Players with the system disabled can still configure and display their own transmog, for example to show or hide the helm or cloak slot. Turning transmog off does not change how other players' helm and cloak visibility appears, which keeps the original WoW ability to hide a helm and cloak for oneself and for others, whether or not either player has opted out. The designer said it was important to be respectful to those who do not enjoy transmog and to keep its impact on how they play and see the game as small as possible, and that Blizzard would share more about the system in the weeks before launch.
Transmog, collections and rulesets
Collections are account-wide across Forever's Rulesets with one exception: Hardcore. Things earned on the Hardcore ruleset are available on the other rulesets, but not the other way around.
What creators understood
MadSeasonShow, summarizing the panels on Sep 14, 2026, explained the shared dungeon appearances as Blizzard's answer to the worry that players would roll on everything for its looks, and described outfits as slot based rather than item based, so a character does not have to return to town to change the look of an item found in the field. He also said transmog is level restricted but that lower-level players can use higher-level gear, which is the opposite of what Blizzard said on the Deep Dive panel; Blizzard's own recap says high-level appearances are unavailable until level 60.
Frequently asked questions
Is transmog in World of Warcraft: Forever? Yes, but it is optional. It can be switched off at a transmogrifier, and choosing Classic Mode on first launch hides other players' transmog automatically.
If I turn transmog off, what do I see? The gear other players actually have equipped. Hidden helms and cloaks still stay hidden.
Do I have to roll on dungeon loot to collect its appearance? No. Bind-on-pickup Uncommon and Rare items that drop in dungeons grant their appearance to every eligible looter.
Do raid epics share their appearance? No. Only the player the epic binds to gets its appearance.
Can I transmog cloth over plate? No. Transmog follows item type, so plate goes to plate and cloth to cloth, though one outfit can store different armor types per slot.
Can a low-level character use high-level appearances? Not until max level. At level 60 the level restrictions are removed.
Where is the transmogrifier in WoW Forever? In the capitals: Fyrenz Vishonar in Stormwind's Mage District and Mon'ye in Orgrimmar's Cleft of Shadows, according to Warcraft Tavern. Turning transmog off or on there is free.
Do quest rewards unlock every appearance? Yes. Completing a quest that offers a choice of gear unlocks the look of every reward option, according to Warcraft Tavern's guide.
Are appearances account-wide? Yes, across every ruleset except that Hardcore keeps its own: what is earned on Hardcore is available elsewhere, but not the other way around.
