Forever vs Classic vs Modern WoW

How World of Warcraft: Forever differs from WoW Classic and modern WoW, row by row: level cap, content, races and classes, talents, items, realms and rulesets, flying, graphics, transmog, Hardcore, updates and access.

World of Warcraft: Forever stays in Azeroth's first year at level 60 for good and keeps adding new zones, quests, dungeons and raids there, while WoW Classic recreates the original game and its expansions as they were and modern WoW moves forward through its expansions, now Midnight at level 90. They are three versions of one game that took different paths from the original of 2004, and all three come with the same subscription or Game Time; Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026 (Release and Roadmap). As Blizzard's Found Photographs panel put it, Forever "contains all of the original quest content from the original game and builds on top of it". The table sets out the differences and the sections below explain them, Forever in the most detail; Classic and modern WoW are described only as far as the sources go. Two shorter pages answer what each group of players asks: Differences From Classic and Differences From Modern WoW.

Three paths from one game

The paths split when WoW Classic arrived. Opening Forever's What's Next panel, Blizzard recalled announcing Classic at BlizzCon nine years earlier and welcoming millions of players back to Azeroth "as it was in the beginning". Talk soon turned to what came next: many players wanted The Burning Crusade, "and of course that is what came to pass".

Forever is the third path. "We're not looking beyond Azeroth for the next chapter. We're not moving forward to Outland and beyond," the team said; it looks "deeper into the world players already fell in love with", with a story of its own in what Chris Metzen calls a "time bubble", separate from modern WoW's continuity.

Level cap and progression

Midnight raised modern WoW's level cap to 90, and Classic's caps follow the version being recreated. Forever stays at 60. Under its pillar of "journey before destination", Blizzard says "we're not planning around future level cap increases that invalidate your accomplishments", and that the professions, routes and gear players invest in should keep mattering.

MadSeasonShow, summarizing the panels, explains why that matters to Classic players: a permanent cap avoids what happened when The Burning Crusade and later expansions arrived and "you essentially lose all the gear" and progress from before. Blizzard's own phrase for Forever is a "horizontally expanding evergreen" Azeroth.

Content

Classic mostly replays content that already existed. Its exception was Season of Discovery, announced in 2023: a time-limited season that tested "how much change was too much change" with new quests, items, class abilities, dungeons and raids. Forever makes such additions permanent, starting with three new zones, over 1,000 quests, nine dungeons and two raids. Modern WoW adds content in new places instead: Midnight is set in Quel'Thalas.

Races and classes

Forever keeps the original races and adds the Skyborne, whose players choose Horde or Alliance at character creation. It also opens six new race and class combinations: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin. Classic keeps the combinations of each original game, with Blood Elves and Draenei arriving in Burning Crusade Classic, and Pandaren and Monks in Mists of Pandaria Classic. See New Race and Class Combinations.

MadSeasonShow picks out the Dwarf Shaman and Undead Paladin as the notable ones, because they do away with the "Horde Shaman, Alliance Paladin dynamic" of the original game.

The influence runs both ways. At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard's Midnight What's Next panel announced that modern WoW's Paladin Order Hall is "taking a cue from World of Warcraft Forever" by opening its doors to Forsaken Paladins, and that Darkspear trolls and night elves can become Paladins too.

Talents, racials and combat

Blizzard wants Forever's combat to feel like Classic's: "It's important to us that we do not change how that combat feels." Classes stay simple and distinct, solo kills take roughly 10 to 15 seconds, crowd control matters in dungeons, and tanks can hold threat on only three or four targets at once. See Classes and Talents.

Forever's talents keep Classic's three trees, seven rows and milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points, and add a fourth at 16. Talents that only improved class buffs are now baseline, and Blizzard aims for all 27 talent trees to be viable in a group. Every race now has two active and two passive racials; see Races and Racials.

Items and stats

"In World of Warcraft Classic, hit was separate" for melee, ranged and spells, which Blizzard calls awkward for hybrids. In Forever one hit stat covers every kind of attack, and critical strike chance is merged the same way. Weapon skill, which Blizzard removed in The Burning Crusade, stays in Forever but is rebalanced, and healing gear also carries bonus damage. See Items and Stats.

Realms and rulesets

Forever has no realm list. Players pick a ruleset instead, which Blizzard describes as "very similar to the current classic offerings": Normal, PvP and Roleplaying, with Hardcore after launch, and on Oct 22, 2026 Blizzard added Roleplay-PvP for launch day. Factions stay separate, groups form only within a ruleset, a player's characters on the PvP ruleset all belong to one faction, and characters take two-part names that are unique per region, as Blizzard set out on Sep 21, 2026. Classic still uses realms, from its Hardcore and Seasonal realms to the Anniversary realms. See Rulesets.

Flying and level scaling

Forever rules out both: "you won't find flying mounts" and "you won't find level scaling", because every addition must feel like it belongs in the original game. WoW Classic has no flying either, but Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition brings flying mounts with Outland, and in Midnight players can Skyride as soon as they finish the expansion's introductory quests, according to Blizzard Watch.

Graphics

"We believe WoW Classic's art style is timeless," Blizzard said, so Forever changes not the art but the environmental effects: rivers that flow in Elwynn Forest, fog that rolls into Duskwood at night, moonlight breaking through the leaves of Ashenvale. MMO-Champion's recap of the Evolving a Timeless World panel adds volumetric fog, dynamic shadows, global illumination and new water. See Graphics and Visuals.

Character models switch game-wide between the original standard-definition designs, as in Classic, and the HD models of modern WoW, which Icy Veins notes have been seen since Warlords of Draenor. On the HD models Blizzard has restored the Classic animations. The new Skyborne race has HD models only until standard-definition ones arrive in early 2027.

Transmog and other options

Transmog in Forever is optional, and Blizzard says it "should look pretty familiar if you've played WoW Midnight", but with Classic restrictions: gear can only take the look of the same armor type, and low-level characters cannot wear the look of high-level items. Players who choose Classic Mode when they first log in have it turned off. See Transmogrification.

Modern WoW is going the other way. At its Midnight What's Next panel Blizzard called transmog "the true endgame of WoW" and announced that from patch 12.2.5 players can transmog gear across all armor types without restriction.

GameSpot sums up Forever as "surprisingly customizable": HD models, quest guidance like the modern game's, and transmog for the first time in Classic, all of which can be turned off, other players' transmog included.

Presets, groups and addons

Forever asks at first login whether you want its Classic or Enhanced preset, Blizzard's Oct 29, 2026 article says; each setting can be changed later. Its group tool lists groups without teleporting anyone (Guilds and Grouping), and its addons follow Midnight's limits, as Icy Veins reported from a Blizzard representative (Addons).

Hardcore

Hardcore, where a character has one life, already has its own realms in WoW Classic, and Blizzard's Clay Stone called it "a turning point" for the team. At BlizzCon 2026 he announced that Hardcore is coming to Forever, as a ruleset arriving after launch.

Forever's Hardcore is a closed ecosystem, but a character who dies can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP. Collections and Legacy are shared across rulesets except Hardcore. See Hardcore.

Updates and access

Forever follows a roadmap that Blizzard calls "a fast-paced production for a slow-paced game": new raids on Dec 9, 2026, then more raids, dungeons, PvP updates, world content and quests, and a revamped iconic raid in a summer update. See Release and Roadmap.

Classic works through each expansion's original updates instead. In January 2026 Blizzard said it would release the Mists of Pandaria Classic patches "over time as we have with previous expansions".

Modern WoW moves fastest. Blizzard formed its Live Team around 2022 to support "a new eight-week patch cadence", and after Midnight's launch the next major update is Eclipse (12.2).

All three are included with a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. Forever's optional upgrades add the Skyborne race, beta access and cosmetics; see Upgrades and Editions.

Frequently asked questions

Is World of Warcraft: Forever the same as WoW Classic? No. Classic recreates the original game and its expansions. Forever starts from the original game and adds new zones, quests, dungeons, raids, a race and reworked classes and systems, while staying at level 60.

Is Forever closer to Classic or to modern WoW? It keeps Classic's world, level cap and combat pace, with no flying and no level scaling, and makes modern options such as HD models and transmog optional. GameSpot called it "a surprising blend of old and new".

Which versions have Hardcore? WoW Classic has Classic Hardcore. Forever's Hardcore ruleset arrives after launch.

Do I need a separate subscription for World of Warcraft: Forever? No. World of Warcraft: Forever is included with a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, like WoW Classic and modern WoW; its optional upgrades add the Skyborne race, beta access and cosmetics.

When does World of Warcraft: Forever come out? World of Warcraft: Forever launches worldwide on Nov 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST, with its first new raids on Dec 9, 2026.

What is the level cap in World of Warcraft: Forever? 60, and Blizzard is "not planning around future level cap increases". WoW Classic's cap depends on the version (60, 70 in Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, 90 in Mists of Pandaria Classic), and modern WoW's is 90 in Midnight.

Does World of Warcraft: Forever have a group finder? It has a Looking for Group tool that lists groups but does not form them or teleport anyone; see Guilds and Grouping.

Can you fly in World of Warcraft: Forever? No. World of Warcraft: Forever has no flying mounts and no level scaling; modern WoW has Skyriding, and among the Classic versions only those from The Burning Crusade on have flying.

Does World of Warcraft: Forever have transmog? Yes, as an option. World of Warcraft: Forever's transmog only takes the look of the same armor type and is off in Classic Mode; WoW Classic has none, and modern WoW drops the armor-type limit from patch 12.2.5.

Can Undead be Paladins in World of Warcraft: Forever? Yes. Undead Paladin is one of World of Warcraft: Forever's six new race and class combinations, with Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage and Troll Warlock; modern WoW is adding Forsaken Paladins too.
