Gamepad Support
Official gamepad support in World of Warcraft: Forever, as Blizzard has announced it and changed it through the beta's development notes of Sep 24 to Oct 16, 2026, and how the controller mode plays: turning on the Gamepad UI, four sets of eight buttons, targeting modes, binding, pings, and bindings kept separate from the keyboard.
Gamepad support is Blizzard's official option in World of Warcraft: Forever for playing with a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard. Blizzard's associate production director listed it among the features there was no time to cover in depth on the What's Next panel at BlizzCon 2026: "our official support of gamepads for players who prefer to play using controllers", playable on the show floor that weekend "in an in-development state". Blizzard's written recap of the panel repeats the line, beside the HD and SD character models and the Modern and Classic visual presets described on Graphics and Visuals. Blizzard has written no article on it, but its beta development notes carried gamepad changes in every build from Sep 24 to Oct 16, 2026, and guides written on the beta describe how the mode is turned on and played; the first impressions below come from creators who tried the BlizzCon demo.

The demo's alpha notice
AnnieFuchsia, playing the BlizzCon demo with a controller in a video published on Sep 15, 2026, turned on the "Enable gamepad UI" option and was greeted by a message calling it World of Warcraft's new gamepad option, "currently in alpha state", with the team looking for feedback. Picking up and handing in a quest used the controller's interact button, jump sat on the A button, and she noticed a soft target that let her cast on an enemy without fully targeting it.
Layout and targeting
In her summary of the layout, the D-pad and the face buttons each hold abilities, with auto attack on a face button and further spells reached by holding a trigger. Party members are targeted by pressing a shoulder button and scrolling with the D-pad, which also moves sideways through a larger raid group; enemy targeting works the same way with the other shoulder button, cycling with the thumbstick or D-pad.
Pressing the right thumbstick sends a ping, and holding it opens a choice of pings such as warning, on my way, assist and attack. Pressing both shoulder buttons opens shortcuts for the next and previous action page, the quest tracker, chat, buffs and bags; chat opens an on-screen keyboard.
GameSpot, which also played the demo on a controller, said the game warns that the mode is in alpha, but that it "works surprisingly well" even with a lot of abilities. By its count, eight buttons are mapped to each trigger and another eight to both triggers held together, for 24 abilities within a few presses. Mapping abilities was easy, it said, while getting through the radial menus to bags and gear to equip new items was more of a struggle.
Action bars and binding
AnnieFuchsia found up to three pages of action bars in the demo, each filled through combinations of the D-pad, the face buttons and the triggers held singly or together, with the shoulder buttons scrolling between pages. The start button opens a menu wheel with entries such as the character pane, Collections and Legacy.
To put a spell on a button, a player opens the spellbook, chooses the ability and presses the button combination to bind it; an edit mode moves abilities between combinations. In combat, she said, it is straightforward: target an enemy with a shoulder button, then press the combination for the ability.
Separate bindings from the keyboard
Switching back to mouse and keyboard, AnnieFuchsia found that her controller bindings had not changed her keyboard action bars. She said this was what had stopped her playing with a controller on her main character in modern WoW, where the add-on she used overwrote her keyboard bindings; in Forever the two setups behave like separate profiles, which she expects to suit players on handhelds such as the Steam Deck. The difference, she said, is that this support "is part of the game itself" rather than an add-on.
Turning it on in the beta
The beta's guides agree on the path. Warcraft Tavern's controller guide, written on the beta, finds the switch at the login screen under Menu, Options, System, Gamepad (Alpha), or in game under the Game Menu, Options, Gameplay, Gamepad (Alpha), where "Enable Gamepad UI (Alpha)" turns the mode on; the keyboard and mouse keep working beside it. Icy Veins' guide of Sep 20, 2026 describes what changes: movement and the camera move to the two sticks, the usual hotbars are replaced by a controller layout of four hotbars of eight, "for a total of 32 separate commands", reached by pressing a face button or a direction with one trigger, the other, both or neither, and an option lets players tap the triggers instead of holding them. The mode auto-focuses on interactable targets close by, the bumpers cycle through nearby enemies or friends, and the Start button opens a radial menu that reaches every menu in the game.
Warcraft Tavern's guide fills in the defaults, in Xbox labels (Nintendo players swap A with B and X with Y, and the guide carries a PlayStation table). With no trigger held, A jumps, B cancels, closes menus and clears the target, X interacts and starts attacking in combat, and Y opens a context menu. Holding the right bumper is enemy mode, where the right stick aims, Y cycles raid markers and A targets the last hostile; holding the left bumper is friendly mode, where the D-pad walks the party or raid frames and A targets yourself. Both bumpers with left or right on the D-pad turn the action bar pages. To bind a spell, open the spellbook from the radial menu, pick the spell, press X for Bind Mode and press the button combination; an item is bound from the bags with Y. The guide found no way to remove a spell from a bar without a mouse, and warns that "some menus and prompts, especially in the Beta, will require a mouse". Among the settings it recommends are the input legend at the top left until the layout is familiar, "Show Input Prompts" on the action bars, and lower stick thresholds (about 0.3) for back-pedaling and running.
What changed in the beta
Blizzard's beta development notes, the forum thread kept by community manager Kaivax, show the mode being worked on weekly. The notes of Sep 24, 2026 added new options to the Gamepad (Alpha) section, among them a layout that "only shows the currently active action bar at any given time", options that swap the D-pad and face button actions under the friendly or hostile targeting modifier, a party-targeting mode in which "each button on the directional pad is assigned to a specific party member", a fix for edit mode layouts not applying with the gamepad UI on, and a change so that Hunters' and Warlocks' pet bar "no longer replaces the bottom gamepad action bar". On Oct 1 the gamepad bindings became static, so "any gamepad rebinding only affects the keyboard and mouse interface", the pet stable and the compact raid and party frames were updated for gamepad, macros on a gamepad bar could be moved again, and a known issue said switching the Gamepad UI on or off resets the edit mode layout to the default preset. On Oct 8 the gamepad action bar got edit mode support, with settings such as the compact bar moved there from the options menu. On Oct 16 the auto attack setting and "Press and Hold Casting" became compatible with gamepad, the trade confirmation, guild and communities, chat channels and transmog dialogs were made usable with one, and a bug that left the gamepad action bar invisible after relogging was fixed. The beta closed on Oct 23; what carries into launch on Nov 4, 2026 will show then.
Couches, handhelds and consoles
GameSpot's reporter expected the controller to be "a viable solution for a lot of people", whether they want to play on the couch or simply prefer it to mouse and keyboard, and pointed to handhelds such as the Steam Deck. He noted that Blizzard has not announced World of Warcraft for consoles and has said it would give players plenty of warning if it ever works on a console version.
Frequently asked questions
Does World of Warcraft: Forever support controllers? Yes. Blizzard has announced official gamepad support for players who prefer to play with a controller.
Is gamepad support finished? Not at BlizzCon 2026. Blizzard called the show-floor version in development, and the game itself described the mode as an alpha.

How do I turn on the gamepad UI in World of Warcraft: Forever? In the beta it was under Options, Gameplay, Gamepad (Alpha), with the switch "Enable Gamepad UI (Alpha)"; at the login screen the same section sits under System, according to Warcraft Tavern's controller guide. The mouse and keyboard keep working with it on.
How many abilities fit on a controller in World of Warcraft: Forever? Four hotbars of eight, 32 commands, reached with the face buttons or the D-pad and one trigger, the other, both or neither, per Icy Veins' guide of Sep 20, 2026; more pages are turned with both bumpers and the D-pad.
