Zephras Isle
Zephras Isle, the Skyborne starting zone of World of Warcraft: Forever for levels 1 to 12: a floating island anchored in Skywall, its crisis and three factions, its town of Valanaar and the airships off the island, its music, what changed in the beta and what creators saw playing it at BlizzCon 2026.
Zephras Isle is the starting zone of the Skyborne, the new playable race of World of Warcraft: Forever: a floating island anchored in Skywall, the elemental realm of air, for characters from level 1 to 12. Blizzard calls it "an elemental skybound starting experience" that blends "Classic Warcraft aesthetics with architecture inspired by Skywall". Players arrive in a crisis. The air spirits that protected the island have vanished, its ancient structures are failing, communities are becoming isolated and the Skyborne are divided: some seek answers from the wind spirits, some wish to reclaim the arcane traditions of their ancestors, and others have turned to darker powers. Three factions, the Windshapers, the High Order and the Al'Aketh, are vying for control. The zone was playable on the BlizzCon 2026 show floor and has been open in the beta since Sep 17, 2026, and it comes with the Skyborne race in the Skyborne Heroic Pack and the upgrades above it when the game launches on Nov 4, 2026.

A kingdom in the clouds
"Azeroth should still be able to surprise us," Blizzard said as it introduced Zephras Isle on the What's Next panel on Sep 12, 2026. "Sometimes the greatest mystery isn't beyond the horizon. Sometimes it's above us." Thousands of years ago, a group of Highborne exiles forged a pact with the elemental wind spirits and built a civilization in Skywall. Classic players may remember Thunderfury and Prince Thunderaan, the panel added, as the first glimpses of "the elemental powers beyond Azeroth itself"; Zephras Isle expands on those ideas "while still creating something entirely new".
The Found Photographs panel told the story in full, introducing the island as "something new and totally unexpected". The Skyborne are high elves who call themselves the shen'dorei, or "the Hidden People", and their history begins in the ancient kingdom of Eldre'Thalas, known today as Dire Maul. In the aftermath of the War of the Ancients, a group of citizens united against Prince Tortheldrin and his plan to harness ever more dangerous amounts of demonic energy to sustain the Highborne of Eldre'Thalas.
The rebels cost Tortheldrin dearly, but their rebellion ended in defeat. Forced to flee Kalimdor, they spent years at sea, "pushing ever westward into the unknown", until they ran aground on an undiscovered land ruled by ancient elemental spirits. With Tortheldrin's fleet close behind, they struck a bargain with a group of wind spirits, who lifted an enormous part of the island into the sky to escape Azeroth entirely and anchored it in Skywall. Hidden there from their pursuers, the Skyborne spent thousands of years building "a small but vibrant civilization" in a corner of the elemental plane.
The crisis
When Forever begins, the Skyborne "have been thrust abruptly into crisis". The wind spirits they lived alongside for thousands of years have suddenly vanished, and for the first time since arriving in Skywall the Skyborne must fend for themselves. Without the spirits, the magic that holds Zephras Isle together is in turmoil: the ancient pylons that anchor the island in Skywall have begun to falter and fall into disrepair, and parts of the island are falling "into ruin and darkness". In that turmoil several factions are vying for control of the island.
The game tells the same story when a new Skyborne character enters the world. Xaryu, who made an Alliance High Order Mage at BlizzCon, watched the introduction: a band of high elven exiles "has remained safe and hidden upon their flying sanctuary of Zephras Isle", sharing a bond with the air elementals who kept the island aloft in Skywall, until the elementals "vanished without a trace". Now "a new generation of Skyborne elves" must seek new allies and sources of magic "to protect their hidden home and secure their future".
The factions
Two of the factions are playable. The Windshapers are the shamanistic spiritual leaders of Zephras Isle and will "ultimately side with the Horde"; only Windshaper Skyborne can be Shamans, reflecting their deep connection with the elements and the departed wind spirits. The High Order are "the more pragmatic and forward-thinking faction", who see the spirits' departure as an unprecedented chance for the shen'dorei to be truly independent; they side with the Alliance, and because they descend from the Highborne magisters who joined the rebels, only High Order Skyborne can be Mages. Skyborne of both factions can be Warriors, Druids, Hunters and Rogues.
The choice is made before play begins. "The Skyborne are not a neutral race," Blizzard said on the What's Next panel: at character creation players choose whether their Skyborne joins the Horde or the Alliance, and "while they share a common ancestry, they no longer share a common vision for the future". Horde-aligned Skyborne work closely with the Earthen Ring, Alliance Skyborne with the Kirin Tor, and both can use brand new druid forms made for the race.
The third faction is a threat rather than a home. The Al'Aketh are a cult devoted to Al'Akir the Windlord. The wind spirits rarely spoke of Al'Akir, which made the elemental lords "something of a taboo mystery", but some Skyborne glimpsed "the terrifying might of this elemental lord" across the elemental plane and, tempted by power, broke with their society to serve him. Emboldened by the spirits' departure, the Al'Aketh have risen to prominence, using the crisis "to stoke fear and seize control of a large portion of the island", and they are an ever-growing threat to its fragile peace.
The unexpected, used sparingly
Zephras Isle is Blizzard's example of the third kind of content it plans for Forever, "the unexpected": new concepts involving places or characters that exist in the Warcraft story but have not been explored, a category the team means to use sparingly. The Classic team wants to keep most stories "firmly grounded on Azeroth", but a starting zone was a good opportunity to explore Skywall. "Zephras is not a major fixture in the world, and it's very self-contained," the panel said. "You aren't going to go here every week to raid or to farm materials." The other two kinds of content are "the anticipated", such as Mount Hyjal, and "new but familiar", such as The Riverglades.
The panel closed the section with two pictures side by side: the final in-game map of Zephras Isle and "the original sketch that Chris Metzen drew up" for it after the team's first meeting about the concept. Metzen "was very stoked" and sent it over excitedly; the presenter, who remembered seeing Metzen's sketches in the original Blizzard game manuals, called receiving it "a surreal and geek out moment".
Places on the island
Zephras Isle's main town is Valanaar, where the Valanaar Skydocks hold the airships off the island. Players mapping the beta have recorded villages at Thendal, Shen'dar and Falaath, the Gustberry Lowlands and the Shadowgale Forest, Windsong Lake, Nightclaw Cavern and two pylon watchtowers, east and west, which match the story of the failing pylons that hold the island in Skywall, according to the community wiki warcraft.wiki.gg. Its quests and characters also name other Skyborne islands in Skywall, Anvilas and Siroccas, which Zephras has lost contact with since the spirits left; refugees from those islands are arriving on Zephras even as it begins to fall apart.
Zephras Isle is not a dead end. Airships from Valanaar link it to Dalaran in the Alterac Mountains and to Skywatcher Plateau in Mulgore, the wiki records, so High Order Skyborne set out toward the Alliance and Windshaper Skyborne toward the Horde. In the beta, Icy Veins reported on Oct 2, 2026, the portals to the island in Stormwind and Orgrimmar work only for Skyborne.
The island also opens Forever's music. World of Warcraft: Forever (Original Soundtrack), released by Blizzard on Oct 13, 2026, begins with five pieces from the zone, "Zephras Isle", "Skyborne", "Shadowgale Forest", "Gustberry Lowlands" and "Shrine Of A'kir", about 11 of its 42 minutes. The album is on Release and Roadmap.
In the beta
Zephras Isle has been playable since the beta opened on Sep 17, 2026, together with the Skyborne race, and Blizzard has kept fixing its quests. Its development notes of Sep 24 say the druids of Nightclaw Cavern now give credit for "Wounds of Betrayal" when healed, "A Firm Response" no longer fails to give credit, and the High Order quest "Catching Wind" has been redesigned. The build of Oct 1 lets the Orgrimmar trainer Shenthul train Windshaper Skyborne and gives High Order Skyborne the quest "Power Over Poison" for Cure Poison, and the notes of Oct 8 list texture updates to several creatures of Zephras Isle as a known issue in progress.
Other races found a way in. On Sep 30, 2026 the YouTuber MrGM showed that characters of any race could reach Zephras Isle by airship and complete its starting quests in the beta, as players can in the other races' starting zones; Icy Veins noted that it was unclear whether Blizzard intends this for players without a Skyborne upgrade, and Blizzard has not said.
The Skyborne's look is changing too. Beta players found the race's high-definition models "jarring" beside the standard-definition world, Blizzard wrote on Oct 7, 2026, and it is making standard-definition Skyborne models for early 2027; see Skyborne.
At BlizzCon 2026
The start of the Skyborne leveling journey was one of two things visitors could play at BlizzCon, beside the Drowned City dungeon. Opening the Deep Dive panel on Sep 13, 2026, Blizzard hoped visitors had tried the demo on the show floor and experienced "the start of the levelling journey of the game's new race". Several creators streamed their sessions.
Bansherz, who had about an hour on the show floor, leveled a Horde Skyborne Hunter on the island. Its NPCs greet players in the Skyborne way, with lines such as "Gale's greetings, friend", "Beware the still winds" and "Run with the winds", while "Zephras will not fall" is heard again and again through his stream. In this stretch he puts on new armor, visits his trainer and learns tracking.
Xaryu set out to "explore this zone just a little bit" and tried the Skyborne racials as he went: one lets a character "tap the power of a nearby ley line", raising health and mana regeneration by 100%, and another carries the character down through the air. "There's so much to check out," he said, and he imagined using the gliding racial in PvP. The race's abilities are covered on Races and Racials.
The wildlife caught his eye. Running through the zone, he found the beasts his Hunter could not yet tame "awesome to see", said he really liked their blue coloring, and that "the birds and the cats look really cool". Earlier he had hoped his first tamed pet would match his character's color scheme when he spotted a prideclaw.
Bansherz also learned camping on the island, noting that its buff arrives after resting for a minute, "time where we get to chat and relax". Campfires are covered on Camping.
Access
Forever itself is included with a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, but Blizzard lists "access to the new Skyborne race and their Zephras Isle starting experience" as part of the Skyborne Heroic Pack, and the Skyborne Epic Pack and the Warcraft Forever Collection include everything in that pack; see Upgrades and Editions. Asked on his stream how he felt about the new race being behind a paywall, Bansherz said "it depends on what their future monetisation plan looks like": if Blizzard keeps the game horizontal and charges only for features like this, "I think that's maybe okay". Other reactions are on Reception.
