Updated Zones

The existing zones World of Warcraft: Forever builds on: new quests in every starting zone, the Wetlands, Desolace and the new Shen'dralas area, Azshara, Bandarion Keep in Tirisfal Glades, Dalaran, three new ship routes and new environmental effects.

Updated zones are the parts of the original Azeroth that World of Warcraft: Forever builds on rather than replaces. "Beyond our new zones", Blizzard's Classic team told the Found Photographs panel at BlizzCon 2026, it went "back to our roots", examining the Wetlands and many other areas to explore what could be added "without taking away from these areas and what already existed". At launch on Nov 4, 2026 that means new quests, characters and stories in every starting zone, over 25 new quests in the Wetlands, new centaur quests in Desolace that lead to a new area called Shen'dralas, a reworked Azshara, a keep for Forsaken Paladins in Tirisfal Glades, a rebuilt Dalaran in the Alterac Mountains, three new ship routes and new environmental effects across the world. The three wholly new zones, Mount Hyjal, The Riverglades and Zephras Isle, have their own pages, and levels are on Zones by Level.

Building on the original world

Forever begins where the original game began. On the Found Photographs panel Josh Greenfield, who helps lead Forever's content and narrative direction, said the game "contains all of the original quest content from the original game and builds on top of it", expanding on events, characters and locations "that exist or could exist" in the original World of Warcraft time frame "to further flesh out the original world".

Smaller tents, a horned totem, pines and red rocky peaks sit to the left, and a hazy tree-covered shape hangs in the sky above the peaks.

Forever also draws on work the original game never finished. Closing a list of features the What's Next panel had no time to cover, Blizzard's associate production director for WoW Classic and Forever mentioned "the integration of previously unfinished and unused vanilla WoW content". The panel did not say which content that means.

Starting zones

Every starting zone has something new. "Whether you're starting your journey as an orc in the Valley of Trials or a night elf in Shadowglen, there's something new just for you," the Classic team's lead content designer told the Found Photographs panel: new NPCs may greet players, offer them quests, or teach skills and profession recipes. Blizzard says it has added dozens of new quests, characters and stories to each starting zone, "along with additional content in every zone", with new rewards to match, while taking care not to take away from the classic experience.

The Wetlands

The Wetlands were the panel's main example of an existing zone. The team "found opportunities to build on the characters and the stories within without disrupting what exists", adding all new content that includes over 25 new quests, new stories and characters, and new leveling paths.

The zone also gains one of the nine new Dungeons. On the What's Next panel Blizzard described a dig site "just above Whelgar's Excavation", guarded by errant Titan constructs: "a place trapped in time", from which a strange mist has been drifting down the mountains while flashing lights have been seen on the horizon. The presenter suggested players be in the levels 24 to 29 range before going in.

Josh Greenfield ended the Found Photographs panel with a hint about the Wetlands' future. Players in the Beta, which ran until Oct 23, 2026, who felt "a little adventurous" might try a corpse run to the entrance of Grim Batol, where they might notice "a much larger red dragon presence" outside the mountain. "I'm not sure why," he added.

Desolace and Shen'dralas

Desolace has new centaur faction quests and new rewards. Following that centaur questline all the way to the south of Desolace leads through the Valley of Bones to Shen'dralas, a new area with dozens of new quests about the history of Eldre'Thalas and its people. The Classic team described the work as "breathing life into the spaces that weren't used previously".

The What's Next panel introduced Shen'dralas as "a mystery hiding in plain sight": players who have flown between Mulgore and Desolace have probably seen "a set of ancient ruins passing far below". There players learn about the Shen'dralar, whose history is tied to Eldre'Thalas (Dire Maul) and Prince Tortheldrin, continue storylines involving the Gelkis and Magram centaur tribes, and find new reasons to visit Maraudon and Razorfen Downs. Blizzard's recap of that panel places Shen'dralas "between Mulgore and Desolace" and the Found Photographs panel south of Desolace; both describe the same new area near Desolace, which is not one of the three new zones.

Azshara and northern Kalimdor

Azshara has been reworked too, though Blizzard has shown little of it. "We haven't talked about it a lot," Josh Greenfield said, but "we gave Azshara quite the glow up too. There's a lot of new quests there." He added that there is "perhaps a crater-sized hole in the content of that zone" which the team might fill at some point. Earlier in the panel, discussing leveling routes, the lead content designer had said that some areas of northern Kalimdor "might have new questing as well".

Tirisfal Glades and Bandarion Keep

Tirisfal Glades gains Bandarion Keep, in the Whispering Wood, a north-western part of the zone that players could not reach before. Forsaken Paladins, one of Forever's new race and class combinations, are sent there around level 10 to get to know the keep, and receive most of their class quests from it. Their story follows on from Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom, the Warcraft III campaign released at BlizzCon 2026. On Oct 8, 2026 Blizzard raised the level of the quests and creatures around Shadowvale and Bandarion Keep, because they were lower than the content before them (Blizzard).

The Alterac Mountains and Dalaran

Dalaran appears as it was in the original game's time. World of Warcraft players have mostly seen it as a city floating in the sky, but Josh Greenfield pointed out that "it wasn't always flying": after its destruction in Warcraft III it was rebuilt beneath a protective magical barrier in the Alterac Mountains. In Forever players "get to see Dalaran in all of its freshly rebuilt glory as part of the world", and may find out why the barrier is no longer there. Kotaku's report on the reveal notes that Blizzard's cinematic shows the dwarf hunter arriving at the walled-off city, which "unlike in Vanilla WoW, opens to him". The city is not open to everyone: since the beta notes of Oct 15, "Members of the Horde are no longer welcome in Dalaran under any circumstances and will be attacked on sight" (Blizzard).

On the What's Next panel the city is one of the nine new dungeons. A disruption has thrown Dalaran into chaos: the Kirin Tor raised a barrier over the city to hide their restoration work after Warcraft III, but the barrier is down, enchantments are backfiring, arcane constructs are "going haywire" and demonic energy is running rampant. The presenter suggested players around levels 28 to 33, and stressed that "this isn't just a dungeon": "there's a whole city to explore".

What moved in the beta

Blizzard's beta notes record smaller changes to these zones (Blizzard). The new Gelkis and Magram quests in Desolace, starting with "Valley of Bones", went from level 30 to 35 on Oct 8, 2026, and their rewards followed. Respawn rates rose across Hillsbrad Foothills, Ashenvale, the Wetlands, Duskwood and Thousand Needles on Oct 1, after similar changes in Redridge Mountains and Stonetalon Mountains. Elemental Convergences and Leylines appear in more places in most zones of both continents.

New ship routes

Forever adds new ways to cross the world without giving up the journey. The team "really wanted to maintain the exploration and your journey as you navigate the world", while also offering ways to "change the way that you play", and settled on three new ship routes meant to encourage exploration, questing in new areas and social play, which Blizzard calls "an incredibly important pillar" of the game.

The first route runs from Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine, so that humans and night elves, and dwarves and gnomes, can play through their starting zones together instead of spending hours, or several corpse runs, reaching one another. Blizzard's recap calls it "an early path between the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor". The second is a three-stop route from Menethil to Southshore and on to Auberdine. The third leaves Steamwheedle, on the eastern shore of Tanaris, and crosses the sea to the Riverglades, whose harbor, Powderfuse Port, "ties directly into the new Steamwheedle route".

A new look for the old world

The existing zones also get new environmental effects, though not new art. "We believe WoW Classic's art style is timeless," Blizzard's associate production director said on the What's Next panel, so the team did not change the game's art but pushed its effects: rivers now flow in Elwynn Forest, fog rolls into Duskwood at night and moonlight breaks through the leaves of the trees in Ashenvale. MMO-Champion's recap of the Evolving a Timeless World panel adds volumetric fog, dynamic shadows, global illumination, new water and longer views, such as Dun Morogh seen from the Wetlands and Dalaran's towers from Alterac. The rework is covered on Graphics and Visuals.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shen'dralas a fourth new zone? No. Blizzard counts three new zones: Mount Hyjal, the Riverglades and Zephras Isle. Shen'dralas is a new area near Desolace, even though the What's Next panel presented it among "four new regions".

Are the original quests still in the game? Yes. Blizzard says Forever contains all of the original quest content and builds on top of it.

What level are the updated zones? Blizzard has not published a list. Guide sites' ranges, and the few Blizzard has stated, are on Zones by Level.

Which existing zones have new quests? Every starting zone, the Wetlands, Desolace and Shen'dralas, and Azshara, among others; Blizzard says there is additional content in every zone. See Quests.

Is there a boat from Stormwind to Kalimdor? Yes. A new route runs from Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine, and another links Menethil, Southshore and Auberdine.

Will more existing zones change after launch? Blizzard's roadmap promises more world content and new quests across levels 1 to 60 after launch; see Release and Roadmap.
