Mount Hyjal

Mount Hyjal in World of Warcraft: Forever: a new endgame leveling zone set after Archimonde's defeat, with Darkwhisper Gorge, new reputations and the Hyjal Summit raid, which unlocks on Dec 9, 2026.

Mount Hyjal is one of the three new zones of World of Warcraft: Forever: an endgame leveling zone set in the aftermath of Archimonde's defeat and the Battle for Mount Hyjal. Introducing it on the What's Next panel at BlizzCon on Sep 12, 2026, Blizzard called it a place players have wondered about "for more than 20 years" and built it around one question: everyone knows the story of Archimonde's defeat, "but what happened afterwards?" Players see how the forests are healing from corruption, how the wild gods were affected and what dangers remain, travel through Darkwhisper Gorge, and earn new rewards and reputations. The mountain is also home to the Hyjal Summit raid and holds one of the three entrances to The Barrow Deeps. Both raids unlock on Dec 9, 2026, five weeks after the game launches on Nov 4, 2026.

Under a purple sky, enormous dark tree trunks arch and cross above a pale blue pool dotted with glowing blue specks. A wooden building with sweeping silver-edged roofs stands on the far bank, three small orange winged dragons fly between the trunks, and snowy slopes show through the haze.

Unfinished stories

Mount Hyjal comes out of the case Blizzard made for Forever as a whole. On the What's Next panel a developer said that people often talk about the original Azeroth "as though it's a solved game, as though every mystery has been answered", while the team sees "unfinished stories" and "unexplored places": regions players have been wondering about for decades. Mount Hyjal was the first name on that list, which ended with "the mountains north of Un'Goro", and it is the one of them that Forever opens at launch.

Tall dark pines and bare branches stand in thick purple-lit fog around a winding stream of bright green liquid dotted with glowing lumps. Stags glowing green stand at the edges of the forest on both sides, and a slimy green shape with finger-like spikes lies in the foreground.

Darkwhisper Gorge and a recovering land

Blizzard describes Mount Hyjal as "a new endgame levelling zone" where players "can finally journey through the Darkwhisper Gorge" and explore one of Warcraft's most important locations "during a period of history that we've never really experienced before". The zone brings new stories, rewards and reputations, with both solo and group content, as players "help shape the future of this recovering land". The panels did not give a level range; the Found Photographs panel describes Hyjal only as a zone to explore "at higher levels".

The Found Photographs panel, where the Classic team talked about the stories behind Forever's content, added a little more. The team felt it was important to include Mount Hyjal "as one of our new zones": players explore the aftermath of the Battle for Mount Hyjal, meet new factions and build relationships with them, work with new allies and face "all new enemies and areas throughout the zone".

At night beneath a glowing green sky and a round green moon, a tall ruined tower of carved gray stone stands among bare, spiky pines and broken columns. The dark ground in front is torn and littered with debris, small red horned figures stand about, and a winged creature flies over a hill with ruined stone buildings.

The "anticipated" kind of content

The Classic team sorts Forever's new content into three kinds, and Mount Hyjal is its example of the first, "the anticipated": things players may be aware of that did not exist in the original release or could not be reached at the time. The panel called this kind of content "the comfy and the expected", the wish fulfillment of seeing places players knew about in the original release but could never explore, and added that if there is a well-known piece of content players want to see, "the chances are pretty good it's on a whiteboard back at the office or perhaps even in production right now". The other two kinds are "new but familiar", such as The Riverglades, and "the unexpected", such as Zephras Isle.

Raids on the mountain

"For players seeking a greater challenge", Blizzard said, Mount Hyjal is also the home of Hyjal Summit, and it serves as one of three entrances into Forever's other new raid, The Barrow Deeps, "because some of Azeroth's greatest victories still have stories yet to tell". The panel spoke of Hyjal Summit as one of the game's first raids, but neither raid opens with the game: both unlock on Dec 9, 2026.

Later in the panel, presenting the raids, a developer set out Hyjal Summit's story. At the Battle for Mount Hyjal, Malfurion Stormrage gave up the power that sustained the night elves' immortality for a chance to defeat Archimonde, and "there must be some who disagreed with his decision". Now there are reports that "someone or something has been draining the power from the land surrounding Hyjal Summit". The raid is for 20 players and "by far our largest raid in WoW Forever", with snowy peaks, a river carving a path through ancient elven ruins and the whispering of ghosts from the Third War.

In the reveal

Blizzard's New Horizons cinematic, released on Sep 12, 2026, speaks of Azeroth's "untold stories" and of "lands unexplored". Kotaku's report on the reveal lists among the places it shows "the World Tree Nordrassil", which Kotaku notes was "also inaccessible in Vanilla WoW". Game Informer's report of the same day names Mount Hyjal with Zephras Isle and the Riverglades as the three new zones.

The zone is already on the world map of the build creators played at BlizzCon. Opening the map of Kalimdor, Xaryu found that "Mount Hyjal is a zone to click on", while other areas he tried were not zones yet. Bansherz, asked on his own show-floor stream about changes to the map, also pointed out Hyjal as a zone, alongside the Riverglades.

In the beta

Players reached the mountain before launch. In a stream posted on Oct 12, 2026, the streamer Asmongold led a raid of his Olympus guilds, several hundred strong by the stream's own count, up Mount Hyjal to the World Tree, where he told them: "This is the promised land, gentlemen."
