Returning Players Guide
How to come back to WoW for World of Warcraft: Forever: recover an old Battle.net account, get a subscription or Game Time, install it, and what has changed since you last played, from the realm list that is gone to new class pairings, presets and two-part names. From Blizzard's guide of Oct 29, 2026.
To return for World of Warcraft: Forever you need only your old Battle.net account and an active subscription or Game Time; you then install Forever from the Battle.net app and begin a new character in a world built around the original level 1 to 60 game. Coming back late is part of the plan: the engineers said on Blizzard's podcast of Oct 29, 2026 that a player who joins in two or three years should still find a community, "the same experience" instead of an empty zone. Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST (Launch Time). This page follows Blizzard's own guide for returning players, "Return to Azeroth", and then says what is different from the WoW you remember.

Get your account back
Blizzard's guide lists the steps (Blizzard):
- Start with "Can't Log In?" The account recovery page locates an account, resets a password, unlocks access and handles authenticator problems, including when you no longer have the email address.
- Secure a compromised account. If you think it was hacked, secure your computer and email, request restoration, change the password and add a Battle.net Authenticator.
- Ask for help. If that fails, use the Blizzard Support portal to reach a Game Master.
- Confirm the account. Once in, check the region, license, contact details and security settings you want for Forever. Region matters: names and groups are per region (Servers and Realms).
Get back in the game
- Check your PC first. Old hardware may have fallen behind: from launch the game refuses cards older than AMD Graphics Core Next 1, NVIDIA Maxwell and Intel Skylake, and the minimum is well above that. See System Requirements, and update your operating system and graphics drivers before installing.
- Get a subscription or Game Time. "Access to WoW: Forever is included"; no upgrade is required. Current prices are on Price and Subscription.
- Install. Open the Battle.net app, select WoW: Forever, and choose it under Game Version. With more than one WoW account, a second menu picks the one to play on. Click Install, then Play.
- Log in and choose. Preset, ruleset, character, as set out on What to Do First.
What your old characters do
Blizzard's guides of Oct 28 and Oct 29, 2026 describe only creating a new character and do not mention bringing one from modern WoW or WoW Classic into Forever. Forever is, in Blizzard's words, "a new, stand-alone WoW experience", so plan to begin again. Your modern and Classic characters remain in those versions, which the same subscription still covers.
What is different
The world is the one you know, with more in it. Blizzard adds more than 1,000 quests and places to go: Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas, the Riverglades and Zephras Isle. Nine new five-player dungeons span levels 13 to 60: Hall of Thanes, Ruins of Lordaeron, Excavation Site, City of Dalaran, The Drowned City and Krol'dok Stronghold in the Eastern Kingdoms, and Alcaz Prison, Blackmaw Hold and Shaper's Terrace in Kalimdor. See Dungeons and Updated Zones.
No expansions came after it here. The story starts before "Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal and before later journeys to places like Northrend". Forever has its own continuity and stays at level 60. There are no flying mounts and no level scaling.
Your class has changed. Talent trees were reworked, and buffs and rotations with them: see Classes and Talents. Six pairings are new: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman and Gnome Priest for the Alliance, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin for the Horde. The Skyborne, a new race, can join either faction and need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher. How much differs from the game you remember is on Forever vs Classic vs Modern WoW.
Racials are not what you remember. The weapon specialization racials are gone, and the last pass of Oct 26, 2026 chose racial identity over strict equality, Blizzard's notes say (Blizzard forums). See Races and Racials.
Looks are your choice. The Classic preset starts with standard-definition models, no quest markers, separate bags, no transmog and the old interface layout. Each character can also use high-definition or standard-definition models, and you can change that later at a Barbershop. It "affects only appearance".
You have two names. A first and a second name, unique together across your region, which gives more room "to carry forward a favorite name". Old names are not held for you: they go first come, first served. See Rulesets.
PvP has a new ladder. Honor and Rank Points come from battlegrounds, PvP quests and weekly seasonal tasks (PvP Progression), and Darkspear Islands is a new 15 versus 15 battleground for levels 30 to 60.
Alts count, but are optional. The account-wide Legacy system rewards exploring and leveling more characters, but Blizzard says "all character advantages can be unlocked on a single character".
Getting your old guild together
Forever has no realm to meet on, so agree on one thing: the same ruleset and the same faction. "Make sure you coordinate with your friends and guild before creating your character," Blizzard writes. A guild that split across rulesets or factions cannot group, and it "cannot freely hop" later. A guild that wants open-world PvP should also know that one faction per player applies on the PvP ruleset, and that Blizzard can limit new characters on the larger faction (Servers and Realms). In the game, joining the guild brings you into its community's world, as the engineers explained on Oct 29.
Lost touch? Blizzard's WoW Portal Room on Discord exists to connect players with communities.
What is not known yet
As of Oct 31, 2026, Blizzard has not said whether any character copy or transfer into Forever from other versions will ever be offered, and it has not published the length of launch queues. Hardcore has no date.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my old WoW account back for Forever? Use Blizzard's "Can't Log In?" recovery page, which locates accounts, resets passwords, unlocks access and handles authenticators, even when you no longer have the email address. If that fails, contact a Game Master through Blizzard Support.
Do I need to buy WoW Forever if I already have WoW? No. An active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time includes World of Warcraft: Forever from Nov 4, 2026. Upgrades are optional.
Can I transfer my old characters to WoW Forever? Blizzard's guides describe only new characters and mention no transfer, as of Oct 31, 2026.
What level do returning players start at in WoW Forever? Level 1, on a new character, like everyone else. The Skyborne start at level 1 on Zephras Isle.
Is my old realm in WoW Forever? No. World of Warcraft: Forever has no realms. Choose a ruleset: Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP, with Hardcore later.
Can I still use my old character name? If it is free. World of Warcraft: Forever names have two parts, must be unique together in your region and go first come, first served.
Will WoW Forever run on my old PC? Check the System Requirements. The minimum is a 4 GB GPU, such as a GTX 10 series, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB on an SSD, as the Battle.net Shop listed on Oct 31, 2026.
