Protection Paladin
Protection Paladin in World of Warcraft: Forever, tier by tier: Improved Seal of Fury at 11 points, Swift Judgment at 16, Templar's Bulwark at 21, Reckoning's four charges, every value as of Blizzard's last notes, what changed in the beta by date, and what Blizzard says about tanking dungeons.
Protection Paladin in World of Warcraft: Forever is a tank that runs on mana, whose 11-point talent is Improved Seal of Fury and whose 16 and 21-point talents are Swift Judgment and Templar's Bulwark. At BlizzCon the presenter said Improved Seal of Fury and Shield Specialization together give "enough mana to sustain combat for the entire boss". This page goes through the tree; the Seal of Fury taunt and what every Paladin shares are on Paladin, and tanks are compared on Best Tank. Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026.

Every talent Blizzard names
These come from Blizzard's deep dive of Oct 15, 2026, with the values corrected to its development notes where they moved later. Blizzard warned they "may continue to evolve". Rows and medals are Blizzard's; where it gave neither, the row says so.
| Where | Talent | As of the last notes |
|---|---|---|
| Row 1 | Toughness | Moved up from row 2 |
| Row 2 | Anticipation | Up to 20 Defense, was 10 |
| Row not given | Redoubt | No longer needs a critical strike: a 10% chance when hit to gain 4/8/12/16/20% Block chance (Oct 1) |
| Row not given | Precision | Now raises hit with all spells and attacks, which helps the taunt land |
| 11 points | Improved Seal of Fury | Mana back each time a Seal of Fury absorb is fully used, more when the attacker outlevels you, as raid bosses do |
| Row not given | Improved Righteous Fury | Up to 6% less damage taken while Righteous Fury is on; no longer adds threat |
| Row not given | Shield Specialization | Blocks restore 4% of maximum mana, at most once every 3 seconds (Oct 15; was 6%) |
| Row 3 | Sacred Duty | Up to 4% Stamina, and up to 1 minute off Divine Shield, Divine Protection and Templar's Bulwark |
| 16 points | Swift Judgment | Ends Judgment's cooldown and makes the next Judgment free; 1-minute cooldown |
| Row 4 | One-Handed Weapon Specialization | Moved from row 6; 3 points, not 5 |
| 21 points | Templar's Bulwark | Absorb equal to 100% of maximum health for 8 seconds; applies Forbearance and cannot be used under it; 5-minute cooldown |
| Row not given | Reckoning | Up to 40% chance on a block and up to 100% from a damaging critical hit; at most once every 1.5 seconds; stores up to 4 charges |
| Row 6 | Iron Creed | Up to 15% threat on Holy Strike; with Righteous Fury on, Holy Strike gives up to 10% less damage taken for 6 seconds |
| After Bulwark | Holy Shield | Needs Templar's Bulwark; 30% Block chance (Oct 1; was 20%) |
How Blizzard says it plays
Blizzard wrote that Protection "needed a useful survival cooldown like other tanks have", and that Swift Judgment lets a tank "react to a resisted taunt, or even cleverly taunt multiple enemies quickly". Of Iron Creed: "A well-timed Holy Strike can help keep the Paladin alive at a critical moment in an encounter." Reckoning's chance on a block exists because a tank is rarely crit, and its 1.5-second limit because "we don't want to encourage tanking large numbers of enemies at once" (Blizzard).
The BlizzCon panel called Templar's Bulwark "a hard choice" beside Divine Shield, because both turn on Forbearance.
Blocking more enemies means more of Reckoning's extra attacks, the presenter said, which the 1.5-second limit of Oct 8 later capped.
In the beta, by date
- Sep 24: Righteous Fury's Holy threat lowered to 60% from 90%, and several Consecration bugs fixed (Blizzard).
- Oct 1: Redoubt's Block chance lowered, Holy Shield's raised, as in the table (Blizzard).
- Oct 8: Reckoning limited to once every 1.5 seconds. Seal of Fury had been restoring mana without the talent; fixed. Mana from Improved Seal of Fury and Shield Specialization stopped generating threat, because restoring enough mana to tank "was causing more threat to be generated than intended" (Blizzard).
- Oct 15: Righteous Fury's Holy threat back up to 90%. Consecration's spell power per tick cut to 0.042 from 0.095. Judgment of Fury given the correct coefficient. Power Word: Shield no longer overwrites Seal of Fury. Seal of Fury rank 3 trains at level 26, not 25. Reckoning now stores charges and spends them on the next swing, so it no longer resets the swing timer (Blizzard).
Dungeons and raids
Blizzard calls Paladins "highly effective tanks", and says baseline Consecration generates threat reliably on only 4 targets, "keeping them at parity with Warriors' Thunderclap ability" (Blizzard). See Dungeons and Raids.
You need not spec for it. Blizzard's dungeon designers said on the podcast: "You don't have to be specked like a tank, but we expect you to act like a tank." Dual Specialization, at level 40, is on Talent Respec and Builds.
What creators said
These are one creator's views from the BlizzCon demo, before the beta's changes.
Riyani listed possible builds on Sep 14: deep Protection with Holy Shield, two-handed twisting, a Holy Shock threat build, a Protection and Retribution hybrid. "I highly doubt there'll be one talent build that's the go-to for every situation." The demo showed the shield on a 4-minute cooldown in the same video; Blizzard's article says 5.
What is not known yet
- Launch numbers. Blizzard has published no launch patch notes, and the last class changes in its development notes are the build of Oct 15, 2026, with only racials after it. Not known as of Oct 31, 2026.
- The 31-point Protection talent. Blizzard's article does not number one.
- Any Protection rotation at level 60: raids open on Dec 9, 2026, and Blizzard has given none.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Protection Paladin 16-point talent in WoW Forever? Swift Judgment, which resets Judgment's cooldown and makes the next one free, on a 1-minute cooldown.
Does Templar's Bulwark share with Divine Shield? It applies Forbearance and cannot be used under it, so yes in effect, per Blizzard's deep dive.
