Frost Mage

Frost Mage in World of Warcraft: Forever: Ice Lance at 11 points, Ice Block at 16, Cold Snap at 21, Fingers of Frost, the rebuilt Winter's Chill, why area slows were cut, and each value as of Blizzard's notes of Oct 15, 2026.

Frost Mage in World of Warcraft: Forever has Ice Lance at 11 points, Ice Block at 16 and Cold Snap at 21, and Blizzard has weakened its area slows on purpose: a designer said on Oct 1, 2026 that gold bots are "overwhelmingly frost mages" and that the goal is that "you can't get perfect snare coverage". Asked whether that means keeping Mages from soloing 20 creatures, the answer was yes. This page is the talent detail; the class is on Mage.

Last class notes Build of Oct 15, 2026

Talents Blizzard names

From Blizzard's deep dive of Oct 7, 2026, with values from the notes of Oct 15.

Talent Where Value or change
Elemental Precision Not stated Chance to hit with Fire and Frost, rather than lower resistance
Permafrost Minor redesign Chills last 11/22/33% longer, not 1/2/3 seconds
Frost Channeling Row 3 Threat reduction corrected on Oct 15
Ice Lance 11 points, new Instant, low damage, up 200% against Frozen or treated-as-Frozen targets (300% until Oct 15)
Improved Blizzard Not stated 40% slow at most
Ice Block 16 points, row 4 Moved up from row 5
Shatter Not stated No longer needs Improved Frost Nova
Cold Snap 21 points, row 5 Cooldown 10 minutes, up from 5
Fingers of Frost Row 5, new, tied to Ice Lance Chills may give 1 or 2 charges that treat the target as Frozen
Winter's Chill Rebuilt See below

Blizzard's article says no Frost talents were removed. Fixes on Oct 15 let Frostbite and Fingers of Frost activate from Ice Armor and Frost Armor.

How it plays

A designer used this tree to explain rotations: one fallback button, then a proc that breaks it. "You get your fingers of frost procs and then you use your" Ice Lance, and a cooldown such as Fire Blast adds another beat.

Winter's Chill now pays into Cone of Cold. Frostbolt, Frost Blast and Ice Lance empowered by Fingers of Frost have a 20/40/60/80/100% chance to apply it, and each of up to 5 stacks raises the target's damage taken from your next Cone of Cold by 5% and adds 7% of your spell damage (Blizzard). Cone of Cold itself slows the first four targets an extra 10% for 3 more seconds. So a pack of four keeps more of the old control and a large one does not: "It feels reasonable to let it retain this level of power when used against 4 or fewer targets", Blizzard wrote.

Frost Blast, learned at level 24, deals low damage, slows by 40% in a 1.5-second cast and benefits from Frostbolt's talents, doing the job of Rank 1 Frostbolt without the down-ranking penalty (Blizzard).

Countdown, on Sep 13, wanted this tree to matter in raids: "I've begged for frost mage to be relevant in PvE". He changed his mind partway on seeing Frostfire Bolt, since with the Fire tree "things get very interesting very quickly". He read Fingers of Frost's two points as a 30% chance in the demo, a figure Blizzard's article does not give. See Fire Mage.

Changes in the beta, by date

  • Oct 1, 2026: Winter's Chill stops rolling a second resist check (Blizzard).
  • Oct 8: Frostbolt ranks 1 to 6 smoothed (Blizzard).
  • Oct 15: Frost Blast added, Ice Lance cut to 200%, Cone of Cold's bonus on the first 4 targets, Winter's Chill rebuilt (Blizzard).

Blizzard's role for it

Blizzard's line is "Frost to grant levels of combat control still unrivaled by any other class" (Blizzard). It also warned on the podcast that tanks hold threat on only a few enemies, so raid area damage needs care.

Thin creator views

Few, dated and in disagreement. No consensus exists as of Oct 31, 2026.

Sodapoppin, a Druid player, said on Sep 24 he would be fine with Ice Block for all Mages, and "if you want two ice blocks, you got to go frost". Blizzard has not adopted that as of Oct 31, 2026.

What is not known yet

  • Frost's 31-point talent: Blizzard's articles do not name it.
  • Whether Frost competes on raid damage at level 60. Nothing above the beta's cap has been measured.
  • Launch values: no launch patch notes as of Oct 31, 2026.
