Mage
The Mage in World of Warcraft: Forever: open to Orcs and Alliance Skyborne, Frost Blast at level 24, Frostfire Bolt at 40, the Comprehension skill, Arcane Blast redesigned, Arcane Wrath, Heating Up for Fire, Ice Lance for Frost, and why Blizzard cut Blizzard and Cone of Cold.
The Mage in World of Warcraft: Forever is a pure spell damage class with three schools, playable by Orcs (new in Forever), Trolls and Undead on the Horde and by Gnomes, Humans and High Order Skyborne (also new) on the Alliance. It learns two new spells, Frost Blast at level 24 and Frostfire Bolt at level 40, and every tree has new talents. On Oct 1, 2026 Blizzard's designers said Mages were feeling they had "a little bit too few buttons" and said they were looking hard at it; the build of Oct 15 then redesigned Arcane Blast and rebuilt Fire Power and Winter's Chill, and added Frost Blast and a new 16-point talent, Arcane Wrath. In Blizzard's words, Mages are "extremely fragile and die easily if caught in melee combat", but their ranged area damage is "stronger and more varied than any other class" (Blizzard). Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026.

Who can be a Mage
Blizzard's table of Sep 22, 2026 lists Orc, Troll and Undead for the Horde and Gnome, Human and Skyborne for the Alliance.
The Skyborne entry is the High Order alone: they descend from Highborne magisters and side with the Alliance, so "only" they may be Mages. Horde Skyborne cannot be. The race needs the Heroic Pack or higher (Upgrades and Editions).
For Orc Mages, Blood Fury gives spell power as well as attack power, and its cooldown returned to 2 minutes on Oct 26. Command, the Orc's other launch change, helps only Warlock and Hunter pets. See New Race and Class Combinations and Races and Racials.
Changes for every Mage
| Level | Change |
|---|---|
| Any | Comprehension: a new minor skill. Comprehend Scroll, in the General tab of the spellbook, reads scrolls that drop from creatures. Scrolls cannot be cast while moving (Oct 1) and take a global cooldown (Oct 15) |
| Any | Cone of Cold's duration is shorter. Since Oct 15 the first four targets hit are slowed an extra 10% for 3 more seconds |
| Any | Mage Armor regenerates more mana from Spirit. Magic Attunement is baseline |
| Any | Arcane Missiles checks line of sight only at the start of the channel (Sep 24) |
| Any | Frostbolt, Fireball and Arcane Missiles ranks were smoothed on Oct 8, so each is an upgrade |
| 24 | Frost Blast (Oct 15): a 1.5-second cast that deals damage and slows by 40%, and benefits from all Frostbolt talents |
| 40 | Frostfire Bolt: a 3-second cast counted as both Fire and Frost. Large upfront damage, then a debuff with damage over time and a slow. It uses your higher spell damage and the target's lower resistance |
Frost Blast exists because of down-ranking. Blizzard's notes say it does the job of Rank 1 Frostbolt "despite the penalization" on low ranks; on Oct 1 Blizzard said Rank 1 Frostbolt at level 60 has a 0% chance of triggering Frostbite. It costs more and hits a little harder.
Frostfire Bolt is for hybrids. Blizzard's example takes Ignite and Ice Shards: a critical strike deals 200%, then 40% of that as Ignite, for 280% in total.
Why Blizzard cut Frost's area control
Blizzard's reason is gold bots. "Overwhelmingly frost mages", dungeon kiting, a designer said. After Improved Blizzard's slow was cut, testers could still do it with Cone of Cold, so its duration came down by a couple of seconds, leaving a moment when the pack is not slowed. The goal is to stop Mages soloing 20 creatures, and raid area damage stays strong, with the warning that tanks hold threat on only a few enemies.
The designer also named the Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary habit of leveling from 60 to 70 with several Frost Mages and no tank, killing dungeon trash and resetting, as "the final straw".
The same reasoning touches talents across classes: procs that give something free have a lower chance on low-rank spells, a change Blizzard explains in its Arcane Concentration entry.
Arcane
Every talent, by date: Arcane Mage.
Spends mana for more damage. Blizzard's deep dive of Oct 7 and notes of Oct 15, latest first:
- 16 points, Arcane Wrath (Oct 15): a new spell with a 3.5-second cast and 6-second cooldown, base damage similar to Fireball, that also deals damage as if you had spell power equal to 5% of your maximum mana.
- 11 points, Arcane Blast: redesigned on Oct 15. A 1.5-second cast that gives 15% of Intellect as spell damage per stack and raises its own cost, up to 4 stacks, for 15 seconds from the first stack. Damage and coefficients are down 40%.
- Missile Barrage: moved to the first row on Oct 15 as a 2-point talent. Arcane Blast, Fireball, Frostbolt and Frostfire Bolt, and now Arcane Missiles hits, can make your next Arcane Missiles channel twice as fast for no mana.
- Arcane Mind: now more Intellect, not maximum mana, and more Arcane critical strike damage.
- Arcane Geometry: range on Arcane spells. Arcane Impact: critical strike chance on all Arcane spells. Arcane Meditation: more mana regeneration while casting.
- Improved Channeling: protects Arcane Blast from interruption. Improved Counterspell: a shorter Silence always with 1 point. Arcane Resilience: no longer a medal talent.
Fire
Every talent, by date: Fire Mage.
Heavy hits and critical strikes.
- Heating Up: non-periodic critical strikes with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch cut your next Pyroblast's cast by 25%, up to three times, to 1.5 seconds at three stacks. Called Hot Streak until Oct 1. Since Oct 15 Fire Blast always adds a charge, a critical Fire Blast adds two, and a Presence of Mind Pyroblast keeps it.
- Fire Power: rebuilt on Oct 15 as a 3-point talent, 1/2/3% more Fire damage per your Fire effect on the target, up to 12%. Ignite, Improved Scorch, Fireball, Pyroblast and Impact count. Frostfire Bolt benefits but does not count.
- Improved Fire Blast: returned on Oct 15 from a rework called Wake of Fire, and adds 8 or 15 yards of range.
- Critical Mass: up to 5 points for 10% critical strike chance since Oct 15.
- Combustion: 3 charges again since Oct 1.
- Ignite: a separate debuff per Mage, fixing threat and damage attribution, and critical strikes close together no longer lose damage. It no longer double dips on damage bonuses (Sep 24).
- Incineration: also raises Ice Lance and Arcane Blast. Improved Scorch's debuff helps only the casting Mage. Improved Fireball also speeds Frostfire Bolt.
Countdown, on Sep 13, read Hot Streak as reworked for a Classic world, noting it never makes Pyroblast instant. Blizzard's deep dive confirms 1.5 seconds at three stacks.
Frost
Every talent, by date: Frost Mage.
Control. Blizzard says it gives "levels of combat control still unrivaled by any other class".
- 21 points, Cold Snap: moved down from row 3, with a 10-minute cooldown, up from 5.
- 16 points, Ice Block: moved up to row 4.
- 11 points, Ice Lance: an instant spell with low damage, up 200% against Frozen targets (lowered from 300% on Oct 15).
- Fingers of Frost: Chill effects may give 1 or 2 charges that treat the target as Frozen.
- Winter's Chill: rebuilt on Oct 15. Frostbolt, Frost Blast and empowered Ice Lance may stack up to 5 times on the target, each stack making your next Cone of Cold deal 5% more and gain 7% of your spell damage.
- Improved Blizzard: tops out at a 40% slow, not 65%. Permafrost: 11/22/33% longer Chills, not flat seconds. Elemental Precision: hit chance with Fire and Frost.
- Shatter no longer needs Improved Frost Nova.
This is the shape of a rotation Blizzard described: a fallback button, then a proc that breaks it up, "you get your fingers of frost procs and then you use your" Ice Lance.
Ice Block stays in Frost. Sodapoppin argued it should be baseline because PvP Mages need it; the first answer, minutes earlier, was "no, too strong", and here the designer said it might be okay but "would water down the fantasy of frost", with no plans at this time. "Frostfire bolt is there for a reason," another added about Fire's PvP troubles.
Group play and leveling
Blizzard says Mages stay useful to any raid or party for their "unique buffs, ability to supply food and water", control and damage, and Polymorph is one of the best crowd control tools.
At BlizzCon, crowd control was one of the two reasons Blizzard gave for dungeons staying tactical: groups need to polymorph, banish, root and trap enemies.
Mage is one of four classes Blizzard says pays no hybrid price, with Hunter, Rogue and Warlock.
For leveling, Blizzard smoothed the early spell ranks and on Sep 24 lengthened Heating Up's buff to 20 seconds. NoobToBoss's list of Oct 19, 2026 places Mage in its top tier with Hunter, Frost as the safest spec (NoobToBoss); see Best Leveling Class.
What creators said
Kargoz's PvP guide of Oct 13, 2026 ranks Frost over Fire over Arcane, calling Frost Mage "one of my strongest candidates for an S-tier PvP specialization", and says Ice Lance is doing massive damage in the beta because there is no Resilience stat (Kargoz on Mobalytics). Blizzard cut Ice Lance on Oct 15, two days later. Icy Veins says "Arcane has received one of the most important improvements" and that this is "not a class to choose" for tanking or healing (Icy Veins, Oct 15, 2026). NoobToBoss's damage list of Oct 19 places all three Mage specs in its third tier at a level 30 cap. See Best PvP Class and Best DPS.
Sodapoppin, on Sep 24, relayed Mages' complaint that only Frost has Ice Block, so the other two are not viable in PvP, and said he would be okay with every Mage having it, a Druid player's view Blizzard has not adopted.
What is not known yet
- The 21-point talent for Arcane, and the 11, 16, 21 and 31-point talents for Fire, and Frost's 31-point talent: Blizzard's articles do not number them.
- Whether Comprehension's scrolls have fixed effects: Blizzard says "various benefits" are for players to discover.
- The launch build's numbers: no launch patch notes as of Oct 31, 2026.
- Tier sets, which Blizzard said in October it would review.
Frequently asked questions
What races can be Mage in WoW Forever? Orc, Troll and Undead for the Horde, Gnome, Human and High Order Skyborne for the Alliance.
Can Horde Skyborne be Mages? No. Only the Alliance's High Order can be Mages. The Horde's Windshapers can be Shamans.
What is Frost Blast in WoW Forever? A spell learned at level 24: a 1.5-second cast that slows by 40%. It replaces the old trick of using Rank 1 Frostbolt.
What is Frostfire Bolt in WoW Forever? A level 40 spell counted as both Fire and Frost, so talents from both trees apply.
Is Ice Block baseline in WoW Forever? No. It is Frost's 16-point talent. Blizzard said in October there were no plans to change that.
What is Comprehension in WoW Forever? A new Mage-only minor skill for reading scrolls dropped by creatures.
Was Hot Streak renamed? Yes. It has been Heating Up since Oct 1, 2026, and shortens Pyroblast to 1.5 seconds at three stacks rather than making it instant.
Can a Mage still farm with Blizzard kiting? Blizzard is trying to prevent it. Improved Blizzard's slow is capped at 40%, and Cone of Cold is shorter, so packs are not always slowed.
