Hunter

The Hunter in World of Warcraft: Forever: the races that can play one (now Human), Aimed Shot baseline at level 20, traps in combat, pets that scale with gear and a unique ability for every family including new Foxes, Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival with Summon Hawk, Sniper Shot and melee builds, and the half-second stand-still before Auto Shot.

In World of Warcraft: Forever the Hunter is a damage-only class with the longest range in the game and a pet that can tank, and it keeps its old weakness: its ranged attacks stop working inside an 8-yard dead zone. "It's strengths and weaknesses," designers said on the second WoW: Forever Podcast when asked why the dead zone stays. Blizzard's Hunter deep dive of Sep 30, 2026 makes Aimed Shot baseline at level 20, lets traps be used in combat, makes pets scale with the Hunter's gear and gives every pet family a unique ability, with Foxes as a new family. Beast Mastery summons Hawks, Marksmanship can drop its pet entirely, and Survival adds real melee play. Humans can now be Hunters. Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026; shared talent rules are on Classes and Talents.

Strengths and weaknesses

Blizzard's Hunter article says Hunters "only have one combat role, damage, but can utilize their pet as a tank in solo and small group play", with "strong ranged abilities and the longest range of any class". The ranged attacks are unavailable in the "dead zone" within 8 yards. Traps can be used in combat but only placed at the Hunter's own location, and the class "cannot Stun or Interrupt" (Blizzard).

Hunters pay no hybrid cost. Blizzard's designers said around 5% less damage is the right figure for specializations whose class can fill more than one role, and named Hunter, Mage, Rogue and Warlock as the ones that are not hybrids.

Every Hunter's baseline changes

  • Aimed Shot: baseline at level 20 for all Hunters. Multi-Shot now shares its cooldown, and Arcane Shot no longer does.
  • Traps: usable in combat, with a 30-second cooldown. Frost and Fire traps have separate cooldowns. Since Oct 15 a Hunter may have 1 active Fire Trap and 1 active Ice Trap, and Fire traps scale with Attack Power.
  • Aspect of the Beast also grants melee Attack Power. Disengage has twice the threat reduction (corrected on Oct 8). Scorpid Sting lowers the target's chance to hit by 2% instead of Strength and Agility.
  • Improved Hunter's Mark, Improved Eyes of the Beast are now baseline.

The list is from Blizzard's deep dive and the development notes. Talents start at level 10 and Dual Specialization at level 40.

Auto Shot's half-second wind-up was promised on the podcast of Oct 1 and arrived on Oct 15. Auto Shot "now requires you to stand still for 0.5 seconds before shooting, matching early versions of World of Warcraft", though it still fires while casting Aimed Shot or Sniper Shot (Blizzard). A new "Auto Attack/Auto Shot" setting switches between the two automatically.

Hit chance is now one stat for every kind of attack, which Blizzard's Deep Dive presenter said helps Hunters landing traps too. See Items and Stats.

Pets

Pets "get increased stats based on their Hunter's gear" and can no longer receive player buffs that increase their stats. Every family can learn Bite or Claw, sometimes both, and Dive or Dash, and each now has one ability of its own (Blizzard):

Bat Sonic Blast: damage and spellcasting slow (30% for 20 seconds, 60-second cooldown since Oct 15)
Bear Swipe: hits 3 targets
Bird of Prey (formerly Owl) Mine!: damage and disarm (3 seconds, 90-second cooldown since Oct 15)
Boar Charge: immobilizes and adds Attack Power to the next pet attack
Carrion Bird Demoralizing Screech: damages nearby enemies and lowers melee Attack Power
Cat Prowl: stealth, and a stronger attack from stealth
Crab Pinch: damage and a movement slow
Crocolisk Dismember: damage and 25% less healing received (6 seconds, 15-second cooldown since Oct 15)
Fox (new) Trickster's Dance: more dodge and attack speed for 12 seconds
Gorilla Thunderstomp: area damage
Hyena Tendon Rip: movement slow and a Bleed
Raptor Savage Rend: a Bleed
Scorpid Poison: stacking damage over time
Spider Web: immobilizes, with damage over time
Tallstrider Dust Cloud: lowers armor
Turtle Shell Shield: less damage taken and slower attacks for 12 seconds
Wind Serpent Lightning Breath: damaging attack with a 20-yard range
Wolf Furious Howl: party melee Attack Power, 40% lower since Sep 24

Other pet changes in the notes: Tame Beast no longer works on a Beast above the Hunter's level (Sep 24), Aggressive Mode returned (Oct 1, in the spell book's pet tab), and pets benefit from the higher of the Hunter's melee or ranged critical strike chance (Oct 15). Orc Hunters gain Command, 5% more pet damage, at launch (Blizzard).

With so many situational abilities, Hunters asked on the podcast about stable slots. "We are planning to increase the number of stable slots," a designer said, starting small and adding ways to unlock more, and described a horizontal journey of finding the right pet for a new raid fight. The count at launch is not stated.

Beast Mastery

Every talent, by date: Beast Mastery Hunter.

Blizzard describes Beast Mastery as the pet-focused tree. Its changes (deep dive):

  • Summon Hawk, the new 16-point talent: instant damage, then a Hawk attacks the target for 18 seconds, with up to 2 Hawks. Its cooldown is shared with Arcane Shot. Since Oct 15 the Hawk stays on the target it was summoned on.
  • Focused Fire, new: more damage for Hunter and pet while the pet is active.
  • Deadly Aspects (formerly Improved Aspect of the Hawk) adds a chance of attack speed from melee attacks while Aspect of the Beast is active, to support melee builds.
  • Aspect of the Monkey gives twice the Dodge, and the pet gets half of it. Endurance Training absorbs Thick Hide. Unleashed Fury and Ferocity now help Hawks.
  • Intimidation needs Bestial Swiftness and gives the pet 100% more critical strike chance on its next attack. Bestial Discipline also grants Mana regeneration from Spirit while casting.

Cajato, reading a community calculator from the BlizzCon demo, gives Summon Hawk a 6-second cooldown shared with Arcane Shot. Later in the guide he gives Lone Wolf in Marksmanship 20% more damage with all attacks while no pet is active, and says it and Focused Fire "ask for opposite setups".

Blizzard's article does not name the Beast Mastery 31-point talent; see What is not known yet.

Marksmanship

Marksmanship is the ranged tree, and the one where a Hunter can give up the pet. Blizzard's changes (deep dive):

  • Sniper Shot, the new 31-point talent, needs Trueshot Aura: a 4-second cast on a 15-second cooldown that deals more damage than Aimed Shot, with a 45-yard range. It adds 10 yards to the next 3 shots made within 10 seconds (Blizzard).
  • Trueshot Aura moves up to row 4 as the 21-point talent, and has been raid wide since Oct 15.
  • Lone Wolf, the new 11-point talent: 20% more damage with all attacks while no pet is active.
  • Careful Aim, new: melee and ranged Attack Power up to 100% of Intellect. Mortal Shots needs it.
  • Rapid Killing, new: a shorter Rapid Fire cooldown, and a stronger next Shot after a kill. Rapid Recuperation builds on it with Mana from Spirit.
  • Improved Stings (formerly Improved Serpent Sting) moves to row 2 and helps Viper and Scorpid Sting too. Lethal Attacks (formerly Lethal Shots) now covers all attacks. Hawk Eye moves to row 1. Barrage gives less but now includes Aimed Shot. Efficiency covers Stings and melee.

Survival

Survival is the trap and melee tree. "If you hate" the dead zone, the designers said on the podcast, "go survival".

  • Lacerating Strikes, the new 31-point talent: Mongoose Bite also makes the target Bleed over 21 seconds, based on the Mongoose Bite hit.
  • Strider Kick, the new 21-point talent: an instant weapon attack that adds 30% movement speed for 3 seconds. Since Oct 15 it works while disarmed or with no main-hand weapon.
  • Counterattack moves up to row 4 as the 16-point talent.
  • Predator's Edge, new: a higher melee critical strike damage bonus, and more off-hand damage while dual-wielding.
  • Expose Prey, new: melee and ranged attacks on the target of Hunter's Mark may activate Mongoose Bite, for 10 seconds since Oct 8.
  • Resourcefulness, new, combines Wyvern Sting, Killer Instinct and Improved Feign Death: cheaper traps and melee abilities, and critical strikes may allow Mana from Spirit. Since Oct 15 only melee and ranged ability critical strikes count.
  • Improved Tracking, new, replaces Monster and Humanoid Slaying: more damage to whatever creature type is being tracked.
  • Savage Strikes raises all melee damage by 2/4%. Entrapment always triggers with the trap, on Frost Trap's first activation only, and has diminishing returns. Survivalist's Discipline shortens Traps and Deterrence. Surefooted gives hit for all attacks. Survival Tactics (formerly Trap Mastery) helps Feign Death land too.

The designers imagined two ways to play it. One stays in melee with Mongoose Bite, Strider Kick, Raptor Strike and traps: "a little bit lazier maybe, but easy". The other stands at range until Mongoose Bite activates, runs in, unloads melee and a trap, and steps back out.

Melee weaving was buggy on Oct 1, when the timers on Auto Shot were "in a bug state". Weaving is meant to take talents: asked on the podcast if a Hunter must spec into it, a designer answered "you have to spec into it if you want to do it".

Countdown calls Survival the Hunter's big winner, reading Predator's Edge from the demo as building to 30% more melee critical strike damage and 50% more off-hand damage, which makes a dual-wielding melee Hunter possible.

Leveling and groups

Blizzard says little about leveling a Hunter beyond the pet as a tank in solo play, and Auto Shot's stand-still rule applies throughout.

Groups get Trueshot Aura across the whole raid since Oct 15, Furious Howl from a Wolf for the party and Dust Cloud's armor reduction from a Tallstrider. Blizzard's article says Hunters have "an amazing toolkit of problem-solving Aspects and attacks", with no stun and no interrupt. See Best DPS and PvP Progression.

Which race

Human Hunters are one of the six new pairings, with The Human Spirit at 10% Spirit for launch. Blizzard says some races will be "slightly more effective than others at certain combat roles" (Blizzard). Orcs add 5% pet damage with Command; Dwarves deal 5% more to beasts. Skyborne need the Heroic Pack or higher; see Skyborne and Races and Racials.

Cajato's Hunter guide counts the eight race entries and warns against picking a damage winner from tooltips alone.

What is not known yet

  • Launch numbers for every talent and pet ability. Blizzard's notes end with the build of Oct 16, 2026. Not known as of Oct 31, 2026.
  • The Beast Mastery 31-point and 21-point talents, and the Marksmanship and Survival points not listed above. Blizzard's article does not name them; 2019 Classic's Beast Mastery capstone was Bestial Wrath, unconfirmed for Forever.
  • The number of stable slots at launch, and how more are unlocked.
  • Whether melee weaving's Auto Shot timing was fully fixed. A designer said on Oct 1 that someone was working on it; the notes of Oct 15 list the wind-up and do not mention weaving.
  • Any class change after Oct 16. Blizzard's racial pass of Oct 26 and 27 lists no Hunter changes except Command for Orcs.
