Protection Warrior
Protection Warrior in World of Warcraft: Forever: Vanguard at 16 points, 5 Rage from Shield Specialization and Master of Defense, Focused Rage and Bastion swapped, the shield requirement on threat, Blizzard's path for non-shield users, and what it says about tanking dungeons.
Protection Warrior in World of Warcraft: Forever is a shield tank whose 16-point talent, Vanguard, allows Charge in Defensive Stance, and whose threat from Defiance now needs a shield equipped. The creator Riyani, reading the BlizzCon demo, said "The game now heavily incentivizes you to use a one-hander and a shield". Stances, Rage and baseline changes are on Warrior; tanks are compared on Best Tank. Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026.

How Blizzard says it plays
On Sep 24 Blizzard moved Focused Rage ahead of Bastion for leveling, to "smooth out some of the feeling while leveling as Protection before obtaining Shield Slam" (Blizzard). On Oct 1 it reordered the first rows, aiming "to give non-shield users a clear path to the middle of the tree, where Protection could serve as a PvP tech secondary specialization" (Blizzard).
Threat is meant to run out. At BlizzCon the presenter said "Our tanks can only do threat on three or four targets at once."
A shield from a Priest no longer hurts. A speaker on the podcast noted that Warriors now benefit from Discipline's Power Word: Shield, since Rage ignores absorbs, per the deep dive.
In the beta, by date
- Sep 24: Sunder Armor's threat corrected on all ranks, with a small rise from Attack Power. Focused Rage and Bastion swapped (Blizzard).
- Oct 1: The row moves in the table, Toughness removed, and Rend and Sunder Armor tap enemies at once (Blizzard; Blizzard).
- Oct 8: Rage fixes for all Warriors, Demoralizing Shout now generates threat on every target hit, and Last Stand gives the right health (Blizzard).
- Oct 15: Battle Shout raid wide; nothing else in this tree (Blizzard).
Dungeons and raids
Blizzard writes that any party or raid "is happy to add a Warrior as either a tank or damage dealer" (Blizzard). See Dungeons and Raids.
Blizzard's dungeon designers said that in the original game a Warrior "with a two-hander" could tank most dungeons, and that they expect the same "especially through the early game 30s 40s". Dual Specialization then lets a player keep a dedicated tank spec.
Later on, they said, "you can do everything as arms", but there will be things that "demand a bit more out of you the higher you go".
What creators said
Riyani, on Sep 14, read the threat modifiers as favoring a shield: "tanking without a shield may be ill-advised".
Countdown, the same week, said of the tree "this is a push for me", one creator's grade before the beta's Rage work.
What is not known yet
- Launch numbers. Blizzard has published no launch patch notes, and the last class changes in its development notes are the build of Oct 15, 2026, with only racials after it. Not known as of Oct 31, 2026.
- The talents at Protection's 11, 21 and 31 points. Blizzard's article calls only Vanguard a gold medal talent.
- How much Rage a tank gets at level 60 after the fixes of Oct 8, in Blizzard's words or any published measure.
- How a shieldless Protection build fares in PvP: Blizzard states the aim, not a result.
Frequently asked questions
