Shaman
The Shaman in World of Warcraft: Forever: Dwarves and Horde Skyborne join Orcs, Tauren and Trolls; totem sets, Fire Nova as a spell, hour-long imbues; Elemental Mastery's return at 31 points, Stormstrike at 16, Riptide at 31; and what Blizzard says each of the three specs is for.
The Shaman in World of Warcraft: Forever is the totem class that can heal as Restoration or deal damage as Elemental or Enhancement, playable by Orcs, Tauren, Trolls and Horde Skyborne and, new in Forever, by Dwarves on the Alliance side. Every totem is faster and longer-lasting, preset sets of four go down with one spell, and weapon imbues last an hour, but totem twisting is gone: on the second WoW: Forever Podcast, on Oct 1, 2026, Blizzard's designers called it a timing accident that was "never intended by the original devs" and hard for a new player to understand, and said letting two air totems overlap would force them to nerf Warriors and Rogues to stay inside their damage budget. Blizzard's own summary is that Shaman are sturdy, welcome in any group, and "lack an effective crowd control" (Blizzard). The latest word on the class is the beta build of Oct 15 and 16, 2026, which brought Elemental Mastery back; Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026.

Who can be a Shaman
Blizzard's race table of Sep 22, 2026 lists five entries: Orc, Tauren, Troll and Skyborne for the Horde, and Dwarf for the Alliance. The Skyborne entry is the Windshapers only.
The Found Photographs panel gives the reason: the Windshapers are the shamanistic leaders of Zephras Isle, they side with the Horde, and only they may be Shamans, because of their connection with the elements and the departed wind spirits. A Skyborne chooses its faction at creation and needs the Heroic Pack or higher; see Skyborne and Upgrades and Editions.
Blizzard used the Dwarf Shaman to show its first idea for weapon racials at BlizzCon, a mace that gave 1% critical strike chance, "so those shamans and priests will now care about having a mace equipped". That did not survive: it became Earth Fury on Oct 15, and Blizzard's final pass of Oct 26 replaced that with Artisan's Precision, 1% hit chance with any weapon (Blizzard). Racials are compared on Races and Racials and New Race and Class Combinations.
Changes for every Shaman
Each of these is from Blizzard's deep dive of Oct 7, 2026, corrected by the development notes where they differ.
| Level | Change |
|---|---|
| Any | All totems use a 1.0-second global cooldown, down from 1.5. Buff totems last 5 minutes, up from 2. A tracking display shows active totems and their time left; right-clicking it dismisses one |
| Any | Frostbrand, Flametongue, Rockbiter and Windfury Weapon last 60 minutes, up from 5, and can sit alongside Sharpening Stones, Weight Stones and Wizard Oil |
| Any | Fire Nova Totem is replaced by Fire Nova, a spell that erupts at your current Fire totem, so one totem can trigger it repeatedly |
| Any | Windfury and Flametongue Totem are group buffs, no longer weapon enchantments; a Shaman with the matching imbue cannot benefit, and the two exclude each other |
| Any | Resistance totems reach the whole raid. Tranquil Air Totem is removed |
| Any | Lightning Bolt ranks 4 and up cast in 2.5 seconds, not 3; Chain Lightning casts in 2 seconds, not 2.5, with spell power coefficients cut to match |
| 20 | Call of the Elements: a preset set of four totems, one per element, summoned in a 3-second cast for their combined mana. Learning it unlocks the totem bar |
| 20 | Totemic Recall destroys all your totems and refunds 25% of their mana; Blizzard fixed the refund on Oct 1 and lowered its trainer cost to 22 silver on Oct 15 |
| 22 | Totemic Projection teleports all your totems up to 30 yards, on a 1-minute cooldown, for 25% of base mana |
| 30 | Call of the Spirits, a second preset set |
| 40 | Call of the Ancestors, a third preset set |
The faster Lightning Bolt exists for leveling. Blizzard's designers said they took the talent that once removed a whole second from the cast, cut it to half a second, and made the spell faster baseline "so restoration shaman feel a little better" on the way up. Blizzard's deep dive says of Elemental Alacrity that the old talent sat too deep in the tree to help a leveling Shaman and was twice as strong as similar talents.
Elemental
The spell damage specialization, with a talent tree rearranged twice during the beta. On Sep 24 Blizzard moved Elemental Alacrity up the tree, saying Elemental "has lacked" important progression moments in the early levels, and raised early Lava Burst ranks to about 10% more base damage than the matching Lightning Bolt (Blizzard). The build of Oct 15 rearranged it again (Blizzard):
- 31 points, Elemental Mastery: back after the deep dive had removed it. Cuts the cast of Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst by 0.5 seconds and removes Chain Lightning's cooldown for 15 seconds, on a 3-minute cooldown. Lava Burst is its prerequisite. A week earlier Blizzard had called the old version "a problematic talent that was holding the class back".
- 21 points, Lava Burst: a 2.5-second Fire spell on a 10-second cooldown, 20% stronger on a target with your Flame Shock. Moved from the seventh row to the fifth, with a fourth rank added.
- 16 points, Earthbound: moved from 21 points. Earthbind Totem instantly immobilizes nearby enemies for 5 seconds when cast. It replaced Call of Thunder, which was removed.
- Lightning Overload: a new talent. Each Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning may instantly cast a free copy for half damage and no threat. Clearcasting is no longer used up by these copies.
- Elemental Focus: its chance falls with low-rank spells, part of Blizzard's general answer to gold farmers fishing for free procs.
- Elemental Devastation moved up the tree on purpose, as "a reason to entice Enhancement Shaman" to spend points there.
- Cost: Chain Lightning costs about 35% less on all four ranks since Oct 15. Fire Nova has much lower base damage and mana cost and a lower spell power coefficient.
Enhancement
The melee specialization, which Blizzard wants mixing in spells; Enhancement Shaman has every talent. Its deep dive entries, with later changes folded in:
- 31 points, Rage of the Farseer: a 3-minute cooldown adding 30% attack speed for 25 seconds, inspired by Heroism and Bloodlust but personal, not for the group.
- 21 points, Spirit Weapons: formerly Parry. Lowers threat unless Rockbiter Weapon is on, in which case it raises threat.
- 16 points, Stormstrike: moved from 31 points, with an 8-second cooldown instead of 20. It raises your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock by 20%, instead of the next two Nature attacks from any attacker. Since Oct 15 the debuff is not used up by a spell that misses or by another player, and it costs 8% of base mana instead of a flat 125.
- 11 points, Shamanistic Focus: much cheaper Shocks and Lightning Shield.
- Maelstrom Weapon: melee attacks stack charges that shorten Lightning Bolt's cast, up to instant.
- Improved Stormstrike: a chance to turn on mana regeneration while casting, and a chance to reset Stormstrike when you dodge or parry.
- Mental Dexterity and Mental Quickness: attack power, then spell damage and healing, from a percentage of Intellect.
- Baseline now: Enhancing Totems, Two-Handed Axes and Maces, Weapon Mastery and Improved Weapon Totems. Shield Specialization is removed. Flurry tops out at 25%, not 30%.
Blizzard's answer to "where are we going" was that Enhancement should care about spell power on its gear. In Forever different stats are meant to matter differently to different classes, the opposite of what the designers recalled deciding around Cataclysm, and Lightning Bolt from Maelstrom plus Stormstrike's Nature bonus is how an Enhancement Shaman uses it.
The limits are deliberate. Maelstrom does not speed up healing spells, because Blizzard does not want to give an Enhancement Shaman too much healing to throw in the middle of a fight, and it does not speed up Chain Lightning, because "I want warrior to be the king of cleave, not enhancement shaman".
The designers admitted Maelstrom was unfinished on Oct 1: with fewer than five points it never reaches an instant cast, so it barely seems worth using. They listed levers they could pull, such as 10% or 20% more damage per stack. Blizzard's later notes do not record a change to it.
Anyone expecting the later expansions' version should adjust. Blizzard said a talent point in Forever is worth about 1% more damage, so "we don't have the budget" for a huge Maelstrom bonus from five points.
Restoration
The healer. Its deep dive entries, with later changes folded in:
- 31 points, Riptide: an instant heal plus healing over 15 seconds on a 6-second cooldown; Chain Heal is 25% stronger on a target with your Riptide. Riptide can critically strike since Sep 24.
- 16 points, Mana Tide Totem: moved from 31 points. A new rank at level 38 joins those at 25, 48 and 58 since Oct 15.
- 11 points, Water Shield: three globes that give mana when an attack hits you or, since Oct 15, when any of your spells critically strikes. Only one shield can be up at a time.
- Tidal Focus and Totemic Focus swapped rows on Oct 15, so Tidal Focus is in the first. Tidal Focus also adds hit chance.
- Mindfulness and Natural Grace sit early on purpose, so Elemental Shaman can reach them for mana regeneration while casting and lower threat.
- Healing Way now raises Healing Wave by a percentage. Restorative Totems doubled, and it covers all of Healing Stream Totem since Oct 15. Nature's Guidance is removed.
One story shows how close the trees sit. A BlizzCon player found the best healing build used Enhancement's 31-point talent, because it gave spell haste. Blizzard's fix, recorded on Sep 24, was to take the haste off Rage of the Farseer, since Enhancement's instant Lightning Bolts did not need it.
Spirit matters. At BlizzCon Blizzard said classes that deal damage and heal with mana get talents or abilities that return mana from Spirit, "especially holy paladins and resto shamans".
Totems and group play
Players told Blizzard on Oct 1 that 20-player raid plans were calling for four Shamans. The designers said raid-wide buffs might reduce that, with "no promises", and the build of Oct 15 did it: Grace of Air, Strength of Earth, Windfury and Flametongue Totem are all raid wide. Grace of Air is no longer exclusive with Windfury and Flametongue, though those two still exclude each other, and both affect players only.
In Blizzard's words, Shaman "will always be welcome in a group" for their chaining heals and damage, Mail and shield, but need allies to cover control and survivability. Paladins and Druids can both heal too; Blizzard's own comparison of hybrids is on Best Class, and the published rankings are on Best Healer and Best DPS.
Leveling
A Shaman can change roles, and Blizzard charges a small price for that: about 5% less damage than the pure damage classes on its damage trees, a number given on Oct 1. Blizzard's level notes for the class are the ones in the table above, plus the moved Elemental Alacrity and Improved Ghost Wolf, where rank 1 works indoors and takes a second off the cast, and rank 2 makes it instant. NoobToBoss's beta list of Oct 19, 2026 places Shaman in its B tier for leveling, citing mana trouble before level 30; see Best Leveling Class.
What creators said
NoobToBoss's damage list of Oct 19, 2026 puts Enhancement in its top tier and Elemental in its second, on a level 30 beta cap, and warns that these are a snapshot (NoobToBoss). Its healer list puts Restoration in its second tier, depending "more on fight design" than the Priests do (NoobToBoss). Icy Veins, writing on Shaman tanking, says "several defensive and threat-related talents" may support unusual builds but that Forever "does not currently have a dedicated Shaman tank specialization" (Icy Veins, Oct 15, 2026). Kargoz's PvP guide of Oct 13, 2026 covers eight classes and has no Shaman section.
What is not known yet
- The launch build's numbers. Blizzard's notes end with the racials of Oct 26 and 27, 2026; it has published no launch patch notes as of Oct 31, 2026.
- Which talents Blizzard counts as Elemental's 11-point talent, and Restoration's 21-point one. Its articles do not name them.
- Whether Maelstrom Weapon will change. Blizzard listed options on Oct 1 and its notes record none as of Oct 31, 2026.
- Tier sets. Blizzard said on Oct 1 they were designed months earlier and would be reviewed as the beta ended.
Frequently asked questions
What races can be Shaman in WoW Forever? Orc, Tauren, Troll and Windshaper Skyborne for the Horde, and Dwarf for the Alliance.
Can Alliance play Shaman in WoW Forever? Yes, but only Dwarves. High Order Skyborne, the Alliance's Skyborne, can be Mages and not Shamans.
Is totem twisting in WoW Forever? No. Blizzard removed it as unintended and unapproachable.
Is Elemental Mastery in WoW Forever? Yes. Blizzard's deep dive of Oct 7 had removed it, and the build of Oct 15 returned it as the 31-point talent, with Lava Burst at 21 points.
Can Shaman tank in WoW Forever? Not as a tree of its own. Blizzard says Enhancement keeps a "unique ability to generate high threat and serve as a temporary tank in small group gameplay", using Rockbiter Weapon with Spirit Weapons.
Is Windfury Totem raid wide in WoW Forever? Yes, since the beta build of Oct 15, 2026, along with Grace of Air, Strength of Earth and Flametongue. A Shaman with Windfury Weapon does not benefit from the totem.
How long do Shaman weapon imbues last? 60 minutes, and they stack with stones and oils.
