Priest
The Priest in World of Warcraft: Forever: the six races that can play one (now Gnome), Fear Ward and Devouring Plague for all at level 20, Divine Spirit at 30, Shadow Word: Death at 32, each race's two spells, Discipline's Penance, Holy's Prayer of Mending, Shadowform rebuilt, the Smite Priest and what is not known yet.
In World of Warcraft: Forever the Priest is the healer that can do everything: Blizzard calls it "the most versatile healer" with both direct and over-time healing and shields no other healer has, and the Oct 1 podcast splits the two healing trees plainly, with Discipline better at keeping a tank alive and Holy better at healing a whole party at once. Every Priest now learns Fear Ward and Devouring Plague at level 20, Divine Spirit at 30 and Shadow Word: Death at 32, regardless of race, and each race keeps two spells of its own, with new ones for the new Gnome Priest. Penance is Discipline's new 21-point talent, Prayer of Mending Holy's new 31-point talent, and Shadow gets a stronger Shadowform without its old raid utility. Forever launches on Nov 4, 2026; shared talent rules are on Classes and Talents.

What Blizzard says a Priest is
"Priests continue to be the most versatile healer in World of Warcraft", Blizzard's article says: others focus on heal-over-time spells or direct heals, while Priests do both and alone provide absorb shields. Priests are also "a very vulnerable class", in cloth with few ways to escape, and rely on friends with tanking or control abilities. As Shadow, they deal strong damage over time but "lack the full utility in that role that could be found on a class such as the Warlock" (Blizzard).
Every Priest's baseline changes
- Fear Ward, Devouring Plague: for all Priests at level 20, whatever their race. Devouring Plague's cooldown fell to 24 seconds on Oct 15 and it can crit since Oct 1.
- Divine Spirit: baseline at level 30.
- Shadow Word: Death: baseline at level 32. Instant Shadow damage; if the target survives, the Priest takes 10% of maximum health. Blizzard's article said 15 seconds, and the notes of Oct 15 set 18 seconds, up from 12.
- Prayer of Healing: heals all members of the target's party and their pets, rather than the Priest's own party.
- Renew: can be active from several Priests on one target, with a fix on Oct 15 for high ranks blocking others. It can land critical heals since Sep 24.
- Fade: twice the threat reduction. Power Word: Shield: can always overwrite one on a target without Weakened Soul (Sep 24).
- Ranks: on Oct 8 Smite, Lesser Heal and Heal were adjusted so that every new rank is an upgrade.
- Wands: no longer gain damage from spell power (Sep 24), and need half a second standing still before firing (Oct 15).
The list is from Blizzard's deep dive and the development notes. Talents start at level 10 and Dual Specialization at level 40.
Racial Priest spells
Each race has two Priest spells of its own, "fully re-evaluated" by Blizzard:
| Gnome (new) | Confounding Flash, level 10: confuses up to 5 nearby enemies for 3 seconds, broken by damage, 2-minute cooldown. Contingency Plan, level 20: a 30-second ward; below 35% health the target gets an absorb shield and a heal over time, stacking with Renew and Power Word: Shield, 5-minute cooldown |
| Dwarf | Desperate Prayer unchanged. Chastise, level 20: damages and immobilizes a Humanoid for 2 seconds, 2-minute cooldown |
| Human | Divine Grace, level 10: instantly heals a friendly target below 50% health and removes Weakened Soul, not on self, 5-minute cooldown. Feedback unchanged |
| Night Elf | Starshards, level 10: much more damage, 30-second cooldown. Elune's Grace, level 20: melee and ranged attacks 50% less likely to hit for 15 seconds or 3 misses, 5-minute cooldown |
| Troll | Hex of Weakness and Shadowguard unchanged |
| Undead | Touch of Weakness unchanged. Dark Sacrifice, level 20: turns health into Mana over time, increased by Spirit; no longer breaks crowd control since Sep 24 |
Skyborne cannot be Priests. On the first podcast the hosts said Horde players were asking for another Priest option, and a developer called it a narrative mistake: the Skyborne's story treats priests and religion as bad. Then, "you never say never", but no plan was given. Blizzard's table gives the Horde only Troll and Undead Priests.
Discipline
Discipline leans into Power Word: Shield and a little Smite. Blizzard's changes, with row moves from the notes of Oct 15:
- Penance, the new 21-point talent: channeled over 2 seconds on a 12-second cooldown, damaging an enemy or healing an ally every second. Blizzard reworked it on Oct 8 to fit "powerful spells that have a cooldown": less damage and healing after a bug treated it as a 3-second channel, and a steady mana advantage over Heal and Greater Heal.
- Soul Warding, the new 16-point talent: shorter cooldown and cheaper Power Word: Shield. Renewed Hope, which needs it, adds critical strike chance to several heals on targets with Weakened Soul and shortens the debuff.
- Divine Aegis: non-periodic critical heals leave a 12-second absorb shield that does not stack.
- Power in Light, new in row 1: more Smite and Penance damage to targets with Holy Fire or, since Oct 15, Shadow Word: Pain. Twin Disciplines, new in row 1: more damage and healing from instant spells, including Shadow Word: Death, Mind Flay, Starshards and Penance.
- Holy Precision: up to 18% Holy spell hit, so healing Priests need no hit on gear. Mental Agility takes 3 points and helps Smite and Holy Fire. Meditation gives much more Mana from Spirit. Wand Specialization takes 2 points.
- Mental Strength is row 2 at 2/4/6/8/10% Intellect. Improved Power Word: Shield is row 3. Silent Resolve absorbs Unbreakable Will and shortens Stun, Fear and Silence. Force of Will is gone.
Discipline also gains from a Warrior change. Shields no longer reduce Rage, and one podcast speaker, a main tank in his guild in 2019 who remembers hating being shielded, calls that "a huge plus up" for the specialization.
Countdown celebrates the return of the damage-dealing Discipline Priest; "all roads lead to the Smite Priest," its host says.
Blizzard's article does not name Discipline's 31-point talent; see What is not known yet.
Holy
Every talent, by date: Holy Priest.
Holy is the group healer, built around variety between spells.
- Prayer of Mending, the new 31-point talent, needs Spirit of Redemption: on a 10-second cooldown, a 30-second spell heals the target when next hit or non-periodically healed, then jumps within 20 yards, up to 5 heals. Each target may hold only one.
- Binding Heal, the new 16-point talent: heals the Priest and the target, 1.5-second cast, no cooldown, "as good as Flash Heal even if the Priest needs no healing".
- Litany of Light, new: refunds part of a heal's Mana if it differs from the last heal cast.
- Twilight Focus (formerly Healing Focus): pushback protection on all spells, for 3 points. Inspiration works from all non-periodic critical heals. Blessed Recovery also triggers from a hit over 30% of maximum health. Improved Healing also covers Penance and Prayer of Mending. Spiritual Healing takes 3 points.
- Searing Light raises all Holy damage and can make the next Holy Nova free after Holy Fire. Spiritual Guidance gives about a third as much spell damage as healing.
- Removed: Improved Prayer of Healing, Lightwell.
The Smite Priest is intended. "We want it to be a thing," a designer said, adding that in a test with Judgment of the Crusader up, Holy out-damaged some damage specializations, so it was brought down. Holy pays "a big hybrid tax", since it also has full healing: "great for questing", healing in instances, and not meant to do both fully.
Asked if Holy Fire's cast could drop to two seconds, the designers said "there's a chance", reminding players every buff has a cost, and that it is a fine opener. No note since has changed it.
Shadow
Every talent, by date: Shadow Priest.
Shadow is the Priest's damage specialization, and damage comes first.
- Shadowform: all non-healing spells can be cast in the form, Shadow spells cost 50% less Mana, and the critical strike damage bonus of Shadow spells is 100% higher. Its bonus Shadow damage is lower than before.
- Vampiric Embrace moves to row 3 as the 16-point talent: lasts 30 seconds, with a cooldown of 30 seconds since Oct 15, and cannot be resisted.
- Dark Inspiration, new on Oct 15 in row 4: Mind Blast and a fully channeled Mind Flay raise the Priest's and party's Spirit by up to 15% for 10 seconds.
- Devouring Contagion, new in row 5: cheaper Devouring Plague, which jumps on a target's death to 2 enemies within 5 yards since Oct 15.
- Improved Mind Flay: each tick does 10 or 20% more than the last (Oct 15). Early Demise, new: more Shadow Word: Death critical strike chance below 20% health.
- Shadow Weaving now benefits only the casting Priest. Silence no longer needs Improved Psychic Scream. Shadow Focus adds Shadow hit, in row 1. Shadow Reach takes 2 points in row 2.
- Removed: Improved Vampiric Embrace, Improved Fade, Shadow Infinity.
Asked on the podcast whether Shadow is more than raid utility now that Shadow Weaving is personal and Misery and Vampiric Touch are absent, a designer said Shadow is brought "for the damage" first, with utility on top such as party healing from its vampiric abilities, Silence if specced, and in a 10-player raid Power Word: Fortitude. Burning Crusade's mana battery is deliberately not the goal.
Sodapoppin, on Sep 24, says flatly that "Shadow Priest is going to be disgusting" in PvP.
Leveling and groups
For leveling, the notes are specific: wands lost their spell power scaling, Smite and the early heals got rank adjustments so every new rank is an upgrade, and the designers call a Holy damage build "great for questing". In groups, Blizzard says Priests bring "a valuable set of tools that make them an asset for any party or raid": shields, buffs such as Divine Spirit and Power Word: Fortitude, and Prayer of Healing on another party. Holy helps a party, Discipline a tank. Rankings by role are on Best Healer and Best Class; see also Dungeons.
Which race
Gnome Priests are one of the six new pairings. Priest spells differ by race as above, which is why the choice matters here more than on most classes; see Races and Racials for the rest.
What is not known yet
- Launch numbers for every talent. Blizzard's notes end with the build of Oct 16, 2026. Not known as of Oct 31, 2026.
- Discipline's 31-point talent and the 11- and 21-point talents of Holy and Shadow, which Blizzard's article does not label. Its list ends the Shadow tree with Shadowform, 2019 Classic's Shadow capstone; the placement in Forever is unconfirmed here.
- Holy Fire's cast time, which the designers would not promise on Oct 1.
- Priest tier set bonuses. Blizzard said tier sets designed months earlier would be reviewed as the beta ended.
- Any Priest change since the beta closed. Blizzard's racial pass of Oct 26 and 27 lists no Priest spell changes.
